JERSEY CITY ? The son of the city's recreation director was released from jail today after weapons charges were downgraded during his first court appearance.

Ryan Strother Jr., 18, appeared in Central Judicial Processing court this afternoon via video link from the Hudson County Correctional Facility, a day after he was charged with unlawful possession of a handgun.

But the charges were downgraded to possession of a handgun by a minor today in court. A defendant is considered to be a minor if under the age of 21 in relation to possession of a handgun charges.

Judge Margaret Marley recused herself from setting Strother?s bail and sent the matter to Hudson County Superior Court Judge John Young. After conferring with Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Leonardo Rinaldi and Strother?s defense attorney Kenyatta Stewart, Young agreed to release Strother from jail.
