For the last 20 years or so, the word on Jersey City rock outfit Rye Coalition is that it?s one of the best, and perpetually unluckiest, bands to ever come out of the Garden State. The band ? which transitioned from a basement show-friendly post-hardcore crew to a pack of classic-rock revivalists over the years ? collaborated with Dave Grohl and Steve Albini, were once signed to Dreamworks Records and toured with the Foo Fighters, the Mars Volta and Queens of the Stone Age, but never broke into the mainstream. Rye Coalition?s public profile is now on the rise thanks to the 2014 documentary ?Rye Coalition: The Story of the Hard Luck 5.? Directed by Jenni Matz, the film was named best documentary film by the New Jersey International Film Festival, and was also honored at Atlantic City Cinefest, the Golden Door Film Festival of Jersey City and the Kingston Film Festival in New York. The film will be released on DVD and digital formats on Tuesday. We recently spoke with Matz about the film. More
