The lights & stairs were fixed last week!! After such a long time & after the hassle of calling an inspector to inspect the building etc.

Thank you jerseymom. Happy New Year!

you need to call the Tenant/Landlord Office with the City. that's what they're here for.

Try the Jersey City Mayor's Action Bureau.

Here's the link:

Nothing gets a landlords attention faster than an inspection by the City Buildings Dept. If they find violations, it's serious-

Hi Pina,

Welcome to JCList. You need to review the following publication to know your rights as a tenant:

http://www.lsnjlaw.org/Publications/P ... Manuals/TenantsRights.pdf

You'll want to thoroughly review Chapter 6 - Your Right to Safe and Decent Housing. This chapter describes several sensible remedies to your situation.

Keeping good records of your concerns is key. That includes photographs, videos, and journal entries that note the date and time of any injuries or incidents related directly to the issues you've pointed out.

Good luck and let us know what happens!

Hi,

Can someone tell me what's the process or an effective way to go about convincing the property mgmt company to fix 3-4 serious defects.

3 people have fallen including myself, but the other 2 never care about reporting it to the company. I took pictures about this & emailed them a brief description & the problems we tenants face but no response for 2-3 months. I keep trying however.

1. Outdoor/Main entrance staircase broken for months & gets worse each day.

2.The 3rd floor indoor stair (below surface) has a huge crack & hole. Can hear it creaking & bits of wood, plaster or whatever falling on me & the 2nd floor stairs.

3.The light attached to the entrance of the building is never working/switched on. It's always super dark in the area surrounding the apartment & I feel a bit scared when I can't even see that there's a person outside smoking at the entrance because of the non functional lights.

What should I do? Who should I go to to fix these issues? Any city officials or police or tenants rights etc? The other tenants say they won't report anything & will just sue the company once tragedy strikes.

Pina
