I think it's a guy arguing with himself, as they share a similar schtick, but either way I agree about the thin skins.

Must have been pretty exciting for everyone there!

Lots of people were excited by this, as evidenced by them writing an ACTUAL ARTICLE about it in the local paper. Have some respect for people's interests even if they don't align with your own.

I know this place is trying, and guy in local liquor store highly recommended it, but I've tried the food twice now and both times it just didn't do it for me. I'm not going to blast the restaurant at this point because I really hope a local spot can make it, so please -- step up the freshness and flavor and don't get complacent.

Good god man

I see you sell food and suggest "BYOB". Do you have a restaurant and liquor license? Otherwise you're illegal and might get busted. Im just sayin. ;) [/quote]

The Individual World Poetry Slam (IWPS) is right around the corner and we want to make sure the representatives from venues around the tri state area are ready to leave it all on the stage in Spokane, Wa!

IWPS is broken down into 4 timed preliminary bouts (1, 2, 3 and 4 minute bouts). The JC Slam IWPS regional will follow the iwps format. All competing poets must have poems adhering to the time limit of each round.

The competing teams will be....

The Nitty Gritty Slam from Albany, NY

The Suffern Poetry Slam from Suffern, NY

& The Jersey City Slam from Jersey City, NJ.

There will be a 4th slammer or "Storm Poet." Like at IWPS, we are saving one slot for a poet to represent themselves and try to take the win.

The cover is 5 bucks at the door and there are 3 dollar tacos all night!

This slam will also be a fundraiser for the Jersey City slam rep, Jelly, to help send him all the way to Spokane, WA for this international competition. Bring your generous and open hearts.

Feedback on the place. Hopefully the owners see and appreciate it..

-Very cool place. I love the setup and the environment a lot. I really hope that they get a liquor license, because it would be a fantastic bar. The people are friendly and fun to talk to, and I love the horror movie night and all the other stuff going on. A+ on decor and environment and people.

-While the Square is convenient, you guys should really get a proper credit card swipe machine. Their rates are pretty high and you'll end up cheating yourself out of hundreds of dollars a year in fees.

-Tacos are alright, but they don't stand out too much. With a little sour cream and/or salsa they were tasty, but without, they're a bit boring. Also, those taco shells are pretty dry in my opinion.

There was a private party going on in the back room when we went for the $5 burrito weekend deal (which was such a good deal!) and it seemed like they were having a great time.

The folks that work there are really friendly, always happy to serve you.

This is a great place. Owners and workers are very friendly and the vibe, food and price are all great. It's definitely worth checking out.

This would be a good spot to book a private party - I asked them whether this was possible and they said yes.

The one time I tried going, it was closed. I'll definitely try again, but it does help to know the hours. Is there a website?

The night I was there early in the evening I sat behind a family with two children who were about 4 and 6 years of age. However once the party started later in the evening around 10 there were no kids to be seen.

Food review.

Finally ventured to The Dopeness this evening just after 7ish.

Wasn't very busy, but did have a few folks come in for take out and a couple others were in the back. Probably picks up later. Tuesday Taco night is also the busy night.

Service was very attentive.

Got some complimentary chips and salsa to start off. Chips were fresh and warm, salsa was on the mild side but fresh.

As this was my first time there, went with something simple Fajitas Carne asada.

Came out very hot, not quite sizzling per se though. It was served with both red and green peppers, onions, spices, etc. It came with four tortillas. I needed about one more tortilla given the serving size. Came with additional sour creme, pico de gallo and guacamole in a separate bowl

You have a choice of black beans or refried beans. I got the refried beans. They came out a little on the soupy side versus a thick traditional refried beans you might be accustomed to. Not sure if that was intentional or not.

Price was right on the money for what I got. Given I live a block away, I will be back.

On another note, they are continuing to make updates in the back room. Also I got a sneak peak of an outdoor area that has a really cool mural they just put in. This is definitely a great space if you have an event or party you need to put on.

I met the owner Johnathon back in April when I was running for Ward E councilman. It took him over three years to get this restaurant open. I would encourage everybody downtown to get over the name and give them a shot and judge for yourself. Also, they have rotating art that is available for sale and provide a neat vibe.

FG

Went for dinner last night and the front room with the bar was full.

The staff was very friendly and the atmosphere really laid back and welcoming. We're putting this in our regular rotation as it was a great alternative to takeout on nights when you're too tired to do anything.

We had chicken enchiladas and a burrito, both good, nice sized portions (I brought my leftovers home for lunch today), and inexpensive (no more than $12 each with rice, beans, chips and salsa).

I finally got there last night, awesome vibe, a little young but not obnoxious.

I think they will be fine. It was a full house. They were not showing movies last night, but there was a fashion brand event which featured stores from West Side, DTJC, and Newark.

The food is the real deal, love the salsa and ceviche. The staff was very warm and friendly.
It definitely did not have a Jersey City feel, it felt more like Brooklyn.

Finally got a chance to check this place out. I have to agree with the others that the people running this place are super friendly and definitely have a sense of humor/tongue in cheek kind of style. The place is like old school jc bar converted into a legit taco lounge (as in: actual place you can hang out, watch movies, etc.) with a seasoning of 90s rap (if you lived in Jersey during the biggie smalls/wu tang clan era you will appreciate this). The guacamole and chips were tasty and clearly made fresh.

You will not like this place if you prefer formal dining, with soft jazz and a waiter in a waist coat. You will like this place if you think the service at Taqueria is too brusque, or you enjoy eating out as a social experience (about half the people dining/hanging out there came up to introduce themselves and welcome us).

I think their business model is pretty well diversified - they seem to sell both art and apparel, rent the space out for events and stuff like video shoots, and are interested in partnering with local artists for events as well. Kind of reminds me of Grassroots Community Space - lots of different stuff going on. I wish them the best.
