Jersey City's West Bergen-East Lincoln Park Historic District was recently designated a historic site by the New Jersey State Review Board for Historic Sites.

The neighborhood, which is bounded Lincoln Park and West Side Avenue to the west, Harrison Avenue to the south, Bergen Avenue to the east, and Fairmount Avenue to the north, will now be recommended for inclusion on the National Registers of Historic Places.

There are four districts in DTJC. Apparently the fourth is so exclusive the JJ chooses to let it remain unlisted - LOL - or maybe incomplete reporting. In any case, given that the proposed district is mostly free standing houses, residents should really think about wanting to be designated. Consider that three sides of a free standing house are visible from the street, windows, siding, cornices, etc. might all be subject to historic guidelines when changes/replacements/ necessary repairs are necessary.

It's not the first historic district outside of downtown. Bergen Hill was a historic district. It lost its designation when the historic preservation laws were temporarily repealed and was not redesigned when the laws were reenacted.

Sudip Bhattacharya | The Jersey Journal

The West Bergen-East Lincoln Park Historic District has been nominated by the state Review Board for Historic Sites for inclusion on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places, Jersey City officials said.

The nomination is the first for a historic district outside of Downtown.

If approved the West Bergen-East Lincoln Park area would join Paulus Hook, Van Vorst Park and Hamilton Park as Jersey City designated as historic districts. The state and National Registers of Historic Places help preserve the historic character of neighborhoods in terms of public rehabilitation projects.
