It is from that digging. I was standing near some reporters who were explaining it to anyone who was around them. Said that construction crew dug too deep and hit something that impacts thou foundation of the Hard Grove building.

I was thinking the same thing re: hard grove suing.

What a shame to be losing these old buildings. Is this from the digging that Del Forno is doing on the empty next door? If so, Hard Grove should sue their pants off.

UPDATE: Downtown Jersey City building in danger of collapsing; 8 buildings evacuated

By Terrence T. McDonald | The Jersey Journal
on October 14, 2014 at 7:14 PM

7:11 UPDATE: The Building Department has deemed the structure unsafe and has evacuated a total of eight buildings (three on the same side and four across the street, city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said. The stretch of Newark Avenue is closed to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic and will remain that way most likely until tomorrow. Work will continue overnight to stabilize the building, she said.

Newark from Grove to Barcade is closed to all traffic including foot traffic. They are trying to figure out if the foundation of 143 Newark can be stabilized, even on a temporary basis if possible to mitigate any sort of collateral damage When all the dust settles on this thing some of us should make an effort to visit some of these businesses if you like them. They are losing a days business and that has to be financially hurting them big time especially if this thing stretches out very long.

Oof. Last I peeked in it looked like Hard Grove had lighting fixtures in and sheetrock up. Bummer not to have one less vacant storefront on Newark in the near future. Here's hoping this doesn't get much worse.

I also noticed that yesterday, so no more Plaza?

The building in question is located right next to Rainbow on one side and next to an area being developed on its other side. That. spot is where a massive fire occurred about seven years ago. I think it is called the John Mullins building or something like that name.

They are closing the area from two boots to the shoe store and the sidewalk. This was all heard from the fire chief on scene giving direction. Of course they are concerned about infrastructure like tunnels, water, gas and whatever pandoras box of stuff maybe under the street. A lot of the businesses like litm and rainbow have closed or are closing right now.

Just down on Newark Ave and portions of the street are closed. Old building that Hard Grove was relocating to may fall. They were digging near the foundation and now the building is unstable. They are extending the area blocked off to be larger and now include the sidewalk, so you won't be able to walk through Newark to Erie. So far plans are to control how the building is demolished
