I live in this area. Previously I lived in the Hilltop neighborhood of JC. McGinley Square certainly isn't as quiet as the Hilltop (not many areas of the city are!) but I'm very happy here. Our apartment is huge, we're walking distance (15 min.) to the PATH, and we're about a 10 min. walk to Lincoln Park, where there is a nice farmers market on Sundays. The C-town supermarket on Bergen is decent. As others have noted, Boyd-McGuiness Park is in the process of being completely renovated. Honey Bakery is awesome.
I feel safe here-- pretty much as safe as I feel downtown, anyway. I do avoid walking alone at night (often take a cab from JSQ if I'm alone and it's after, say, 9pm, which costs about $4.50, before tip). If I am walking at night, I avoid Bergen. As far as the negatives of the area go, I wish there were a couple "nice" bars or restaurants. And I wish the walk to downtown were more inviting. Montgomery doesn't exactly offer a nice stroll. Usually, I take the PATH to go downtown. The 80 bus goes downtown, too, but I haven't tried it yet.

i agree there is no comparison between gv and the heights. first, there is the convenience factor and second, you are more likely to encounter the thug factor in gv. as i mentioned before, i know this guy (young and strong as an ox) who was robbed/mugged twice in gv. he moved to union city and has not looked back once. i think mcginley square is improving but there is still sketchiness.
i think more windsor terrace feel in the heights around congress avenue

We're moving from Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn, but I've lived in a variety of neighborhoods. I'm not worried about a little sketchiness, but just want to make sure it's not really unsafe (shootings, muggings, rape, things like that). The general consensus seems to be that that is not the case!

I've been in JC for 19 years, and in this neioghborhood for 3 years. I like it a lot and haven't had any problems.
Where are you moving from?

How long have you been living in Jersey City? Please don't ever, ever compare the Heights with Greenville. It's roll in's like you who post on this board without any clue as to what you are writing. I'm a 27 year resident of the Heights and it is the most underrated, under appreciated part of the city. It's not bad now, never has been bad and is now in the process of a major change with new business and urbanites moving in. Safe as safe can be in Jersey City. It is by far the BEST place to buy real estate (I've already flipped 2 properties with massive profit) as it is still reasonable to buy a proper house with parking and a yard. Every time I see these Heights/Greenville comparisons I cringe. It also means the people who are making them have absolutely no clue as to this city.

Boyd-McGuinness Park is getting completely revamped right now. It's at the corner of Kennedy & Duncan.
http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... _boyd-mcguiness_park.html I'm in the neighborhood too, and like it a lot.

We did the same thing. We came here on a weekend night and walked the blocks. My wife thought me crazy for stopping people and asking them about the neighborhood. It's a good idea to get a feel for the place.

We have two children that are well above 5 months old! They go to private schools so we don't have to worry about the public system. If we did have them in public schools, I'm not sure if we would be here. But that seems to be the theme in all of Hudson county--sub-par public schools. The one gem that Jersey City has is McNair High School, which is supposed to be outstanding. There are existing playgrounds at Lincoln Park. I'm in the park quite a bit. Great tennis courts, track, and all around beautiful space.

That's near Soliel Lofts, the new thirteen screen movie theater and new 10,000 square foot grocery store that St Peter's is putting in. It's walking distance to the PATH, five banks, the post office, Prince Pizza, and two pretty decent fruit and vegetable stores. If you like vinyl records and homemade chocolate, you've got Stans Records and Lee Sims Chocolate right around the corner. It's a great neighborhood. I've been here for three years now and love it much more than the Heights. Good luck with your decision!

Saint Peter's University is in the area, you'll benefit from its presence as no University survives without a secure neighborhood.
But, it IS Jersey City and it isn't in Ward E. So, it is true, you are near Duncan Avenue and low income housing. As is the case in any setting that harbors low socioeconomic housing, you'll get your low level crime, like smashing into cars to grab something of value. That area though, I think, is a good investment long term. I pretty much feel that way about all of Jersey City, with the exception of both the Heights and Greenville. Wouldn't touch either with a ten foot pole.

That's great to hear! Do you have any kids? We have a 5 month old - heard they are putting in a new playground nearby.

We moved to this block last year and we've been very happy. Neighbors are nice and (knock on wood) the block has been quiet. While I don't know about that particular building, I would recommend seriously considering moving here.

I don't think you'll have a problem there. However, I would recommend swinging by at night over the next few days to get a feel for what the area is like. It's still a bit warmer out so if there are people that like to hang out, they'll be hanging out.

We are considering buying a condo at 333 Fairmount. We've heard that there is a lot of crime in the area, but were wondering if anyone has specific experiences (mugging, car break-ins, anything more serious).
