Washington-Webb and I have different points of views, she believes in affordable housing and I do not. There will be another tax lien sale this December, taxpayers will lose their homes because they do not have affordable taxes. They are paying the school and other services for affordable housing which makes taxes unaffordable for them.

Joshua, your comment is silly. However, some people went to jail but others like Washington did not. It is obvious Big Rid was done to get Christie elected. But what's important is that she still attends and speaks at City Council meetings to decry the corruptions and inefficiencies of our government.

Ex-Jersey City council candidate gets 18 months probation for mail, wire fraud

The former Jersey City Council candidate who pleaded guilty to taking money from a federal informant five years ago received her sentencing today in federal court in Newark.

LaVern Webb-Washington was sentenced to 18 months probation and a $250 fine for mail fraud and one count of wire fraud today by U.S. District Judge Jose Linares.

The community activist and former council candidate also must pay back the money she took as part of a sting operation -- of which she has already paid back $13,500. However, Webb-Washington still owes the government $1,500.

The wide-ranging 2009 Operation Bid Rig sting operation ensnared dozens of elected officials, would-be office-holders, government workers and others. Among those who pleaded guilty or were convicted are former Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano, Jersey City Deputy Mayor Leona Beldini and former Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell.

As Linares handed down the sentence this morning, he said to Webb-Washington: "Good luck, and stay out of trouble."

"This brings to end a saga for New Jersey," said Wanda Akin, Webb-Washington's attorney. Webb-Washington's prosecution was the last of the Bid Rig cases to be adjudicated.

"We felt the sentence was fair and appropriate," Akin added. "Except for this transgression, she [Webb-Washington] is a model citizen. Her community work is extraordinary, of course, that doesn't excuse her conduct."

Webb-Washington was originally charged with accepting $15,000 from Solomon Dwek -- a government informant acting as a corrupt developer -- as a part of the wide-ranging Operation Bid Rig.

She took the money in return for her vote on a bogus real estate project and later pleaded guilty to extortion conspiracy and was sentenced to 366 days in federal prison.

However, the plea and the charges were later thrown out when a federal court ruled that candidates for public office could not be charged under the federal Hobbs Act, with prohibits officials from accepting cash for influence.
