Officials break ground on $56M ship-to-rail facility in BayonneBy BAYONNE -- Officials broke ground on a $56 million ship-to-rail facility Monday morning, which they say will take nearly 400,000 trucks off crowded roadways each year. The new rail facility will connect GCT Bayonne, also known as Global Terminal, with the existing CSX and Norfolk Southern railroad that spans the Newark Bay. At least this is in the ballpark of what the PA was formed to do a century ago and has still not done, building a trans Hudson freight crossing. Now if they only got out of the office tower game.

By Steve Strunsky | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com September 17, 2014 at 4:19 PM The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will spend $356 million to remake a facility in Jersey City used load containers onto trains after they are shipped by water from Brooklyn, two years after it was damaged by Superstorm Sandy. The bi-state agency's board of commissioners today approved the plan to redevelop the 27-acre Greenville Yard site on the city's southern waterfront, near Bayonne. The site currently handles about 4,000 containers a year shipped from the Port Authority's Red Hook Terminal in Brooklyn. The redeveloped ship-to-rail portion of the site will help handle anticipated growth in container volume at the adjacent Global Container Terminal, which this summer completed a $330 million expansion and automation. Apart from accommodating container volume growth, officials said the project would help reduce port truck traffic and emissions, and provide jobs. Port Authority staffers told commissioners that two-thirds of the cost would be covered by Sandy-related grants and by revenues from a facilities charge on each container that passes through the port. The facilities charge is now the subject of a lawsuit by shipping companies who say it is unfair to force them to pay for ship-to-rail operations if they only transport containers on land by truck.
