I never called for it to be removed. (I actually like it, if only for its over-the-topness.) I was simply pointing out its historical inaccuracy.

You're 100% correct. But calling for a statue or piece of art to be removed because it upsets your delicate sensibilities is silly. Stop being offended or upset so easily.

How about you put on your big boy panties and just get over it. People who are easily offended/mortified by artwork should just stay in their room and not bother the rest of us who can appreciate such works. It's a beautifully stirring piece of work that stands out in that space.

Stalin beat Hitler by sheer numbers of victims, Hitler beat Stalin by the depravity of his murders. That's why I wrote "arguably". The presence of the sculpture at the waterfront is jarring, its shocking nature probably the sculptor's intent. Next to it is a memorial containing twisted 9/11 wreckage. We have a "atrocities row" on JC waterfront...

Sorry, but no. Gulags, purges, forced migrations, starving the Ukraine; many millions did die. But they all don't add up to the low moral point of western civilization: factories for systematically murdering people by the millions. In the game of stripping humanity from the victims (and the perpetrators) Hitler beat Stalin. Back to art, I don't feel that getting there first entitles an artwork to permanent tenure. I HATED Richard Serra's Tilted Arc in the Federal Plaza and cheered when it was removed over the artistic community's objections, it's presence effectively destroyed that public space.

The bayonet symbolizes being "stabbed in the back" by Soviet secret service (NKVD). I think the sculpture is too literal, and really not very good. But, it was there first. It was there when there was no waterfront to speak of. So in that sense it should stay where it is. At least more folks will learn about Soviet atrocities, which arguably were worse than those of National Socialists.

It memorializes the slaughter of 4000 Polish soldiers, all of whom were shot. The bayonette-in-the-back imagery is unnecessarily macabre, not to mention inaccurate.

The littering should be reported. Keep calling the RRC
As for the statue, if you know JC's history, The Paulus Hook area Gammantown, was home to Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian people.

Thanks for the info, I went to Moe's yesterday and picked his brain. He told me basically what you told me, but that the bigger 15-20 pound stripers may not be out for a week or two. We scoped out the area yesterday, there seem to be a lot of 'no fishing' signs along the waterfront until you get out to the tip of exchange place. It was incredibly loud out there; a pretty lackluster car show had 50,000 watts of pop music on blast for an hour or two. Hopefully its not like that most weekends.

No hijack, Webbie has declared this the "fishing" thread though he declines to change the linkbait title. As for getting started, at least as far as the pier it's real easy. Assuming your gear is heavy enough for this game, get bunker (large baitfish) sinkers and large (7-0 to 10-0) hooks at tackle store, and go to the pier and fling big chunks of bunker out there. After that it's largely time and luck. Better yet, before doing anything go chat up the guys fishing, soaking bait is pretty boring and most are happy to tell you what they know.

I have to say (back to the original content) that the fishermen on the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway who fish at the Hyatt pier are the biggest slobs the whole length of the HRWW. I bike there almost daily, and that location always has trash and crap littering the area. It's not like that at other spots that attract fishermen for some reason.

Size also matter, a 30 lb striper or 15 lb blue has been concentrating pollution for far longer than a small blue, a fluke or a porgy. Small blues taste better anyhow. Had fried Raritan Bay fluke for dinner last night, doesn't get better.

NY/NJ coastal waters are, actually, among the cleanest in the US. The Hudson River where we live is ocean water. It receives 6' of tide, 4x per day. It's a big washing machine. Unless it has rained heavily within 24 hours, the water in our area is really not very nasty at all.
Another point ... the fish that swim in NY Harbor off the coast of Jersey City are migratory by nature. For instance, one popular species to catch is the striped bass - a striped bass caught off Exchange Place could have been in Cape May a week ago, or Cape Cod last year. Another popular fishing species - the fluke (summer flounder) spends its winters in the depths of the ocean, way out, and comes inshore in the warmer months. If you don't eat local fish in general, that's another story. But the fish caught here in our harbor are really no different than the ones caught in Montauk or the Jersey Shore. These fish don't stay in one place.

yes i avoid many types of fish - tilapia / farm raised / endangered over farmed / high mercury content such as tuna. So most time i just eat wild salmon / smelt, as the population is plenty and it doesn't impose a long term risk to you. but i am not so sure about what you said regarding the hudson river around manhattan/jersey city. I know they stopped dumping toxic waste in there but have you seen the crap that's still in there? not to mention the high concentration of motor boats/ferries in a relatively small body of water. Here's what the government has to say about it. I really dont think you should eat any fish caught in the water around where we are. Quote:

It's no different from eating fish caught in the ocean (which the Hudson River in our area essentially is). Eating wild healthy fish from the Hudson River is also about 1,000,000 healthier than eating Tilapia in any form, which is done very commonly. Or any of that flash frozen fish (which is all sourced and packaged in disgusting China) that you see in supermarkets. This isn't the 1970s - the lower Hudson River/Upper NY Bay is clean and absolutely teeming with life.

I asked rent-a-cop once who was guarding such an event; he said it is legal... you need a permit and a public area is not so public anymore. It becomes private, temporarily.

Not recommended eating for children and women who might become pregnant, but men and women who won't become pregnant can eat limited quantities of fish from the Hudson. (And, since the guidelines are designed to be conservative, exceeding them is probably not going to hurt anyone.) http://www.health.ny.gov/publications/2794.pdf I think it's great for people to want to eat what they catch, as it (hopefully) encourages them to support large-scale efforts to keep the river clean and to behave in small-scale ways that help (by, for example, not doing stupid things like throwing cigarette butts in the street).

do people actually eat the fish they caught from the hudson? are they suicidal?
i thought it's strictly catch and release, that noone is crazy enough to eat them.

A couple of the piers in Hoboken have troughs and sinks for the fishermen to use, so the blood n' guts effluvia isn't an issue. Would be nice if JC incorporated those into the popular fishing sites.

I run on the waterfront pier like many runners often and those wedding ceremonies are extremely annoying.
I dont mind if they take photos on the pier due to the nice view, but that's not the issue. They actually have the entire ceremony on the pier with chairs and everything. And it is placed directly on the walkway, even have the audacity to put yellow tapes on both ends. So by the time you are close and realized the walkway is blocked there is no way to get down. Either have to duck under the tapes and run through their chairs or go all the way back to exit to the lower level. It has happened 3 times already in the last few weeks outside the harborside plaza, i dont know who organized it. But it cant be legal, the walkway is public space how can you put 50 chairs there and block it with yellow tape for hours? I am going to complain to the harborside management if this continues. PS i always run back and go around them instead of through the tape, as i understand it's a special day for the people involved and they probably arent at fault. It's the organizers that i am annoyed at.

You know, you'd think if the webmaster was determined to consolidate threads vaguely related, he'd at least retitle them to something generic, like in this case: "FISHING", since the moved additions are clearly NOT about "FISHERMEN VERSUS OUTDOOR WEDDING PARTIES".

Right now is "snapper season", juvenile bluefish which are fun for kids to catch and tasty. I'm sure Moe will be happy to set you up with the standard "popper" casting rig. you can also bobber fish for them with bait like spearing or even raw chicken. Another good place to try is at the South end of Liberty by the picnic area, it has the shallow structure that bait like and the snappers follow.
