Nicolas Fernandes | The Jersey Journal For most kids, summer vacation is a time for playing sports, hanging with friends and maybe even a part-time job. But for 10 Jersey City high school students with a passion for art, this summer has been spent painting murals and learning from experienced artists ? all while getting paid. Since the Jersey City Mural Arts Program hired teens ages 15 to 18 as summer apprentices, the group has collaborated on four public art projects throughout the city. The students were hired through Jersey City Summer Works program and worked three days a week at $8.25 an hour. "We all have fun," said Maya Sanders, 15, who is participating in the program. "It's great when you work with different people who are already pros at doing murals." Among the diverse artists participating in the program are Hungarian-born mural artist Kati Vilim, Montclair-native mural artist Catherine Hart, Mana Contemporary Arts-based artist Bradley Ehrsa and Alvin Petit, the Bethune Center director.
