First, it's a schlep from the bridge to much of LSP-the playground, the central parking area near the Nature Interpretative Center, the picnic area at the south end of the park, so it is a plus in that regard rather than driving Grand to Pacific to Johnston.

Second, it's not about LSP access, it's about Fulop's casino access.

I am also bewildered by why this is being made a priority. In theory this would only help downtown residents get to LSP by car. Of the downtown residents that go to LSP, how many of them drive a car? Unless you are disabled, walking or biking seems to be the preferred method for downtowners to enter the park.

This project is not cheap, and will drastically impact a very nice, somewhat quiet neighborhood. I think this is really a mistake.

One thing that really bums me out about this is that there's a ton of wildlife living in that little inlet. What are the odds their habitat will survive the construction intact?

Walk down to the footbridge one evening, and depending on the time of year you may see great blue herons, egrets, swans, black-crowned night herons, brants, killdeer, swallows and various ducks and geese. I've also seen rabbits, raccoons (there's a family with five young there now), skunks, opossums and other furry creatures, though I'd assume they're less dependent on the fishing than the birds are.

Hard to imagine any of them sticking around through 24-hour traffic...

Have you ever thought about what goes into a construction project?

There is a whole process once a design has been created. There is a bid process for a general contractor and sub contractors. There is a budget set, it is altered depending on the bids/market value, then you go seek funding. Since this is a public project, the funding part should be easier as it is usually predetermined before the project is designed. But public projects bring a slew of other things: bureaucracy and a whole lot of paper work (think DMV).

Unfortunately, it's not as simple as signing a contract.

probably because of all the opposition by people who don't understand the benefit of this project for the city and the park. People and change are a lot like oil and water. Im not saying all change is good, but in this case, it seems like an obvious plus for residents. You wont hear complaints after its built and the carpocolypse on Jersey Ave never happened.

Roadway extension in Jersey City hopes to ease Turnpike traffic

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority this week entered into a formal agreement with Jersey City to construct a $10 million bridge from Downtown into Liberty State Park.

State officials are moving ahead with plans to construct a $10 million extension of Jersey Avenue into Liberty State Park in Jersey City.

The proposed roadway would cross the Morris Canal, giving motorists a shortcut to Liberty State Park from Downtown Jersey City.

It would also relieve congestion on the New Jersey Turnpike Extension by giving drivers the option of using local roads to get to Jersey City rather than staying on the extension along with traffic headed to the Holland Tunnel, Turnpike spokesman Thomas Feeney said.

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority last week approved a formal agreement with Jersey City. A construction contract could be approved next summer, Feeney said.

Plans for the bridge have faced opposition in the past from Downtown residents who fear it would encourage commuters to use local streets to get to the Holland Tunnel.

Sam Pesin, president of Friends of Liberty State Park, told The Jersey Journal that the group's main interest is for the extension to have plenty of room for pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Thousands of new residential units under construction in Downtown means potentially thousands more people walking or biking into Liberty State Park, Pesin said.

He also wants safety measures inside the park where the roadway would connect with Phillip Street: either a four-way stop or a traffic signal.

"The Turnpike can't just say, 'Oh we're (adding) a two-lane road' and ignore the fact that there's going to be a super busy, dangerous intersection," he said.

Actually, this is a pedestrian friendly move. Now there will be lights and traffic making walking from Grove to the LSP area a less risky proposition.

I don't understand how this move is bad for pedestrians at all. I think anything that makes driving less miserable is somehow anti pedestrian, because some people think drivers must be miserable for JC to have any progress.

If you want more mass transit options, how does this bridge hurt? Is the city working against mass transit in anyway?

If you want to help people walking, the city could start fining bikers who ride on the sidewalk...if everyone was fined we could probably build a new PATH station in a few years.

"Rape Bridge" is a historical name. It has been called that since the early eighties.


Historically, it has also been called the "rat bridge" and the "stinky bridge". On certain days, depending on tides and temperatures, interesting fumes will waft up from the wetlands. Also, for those who only know THIS incarnation of the bridge: you would have been appalled for what was there before. It was a rickety wooden bridge (never maintained!) that really personalized all the names and monikers by which the bridge was known. This current version is downright swanky!

Amen to all of this. I love how everyone is all of the sudden a traffic expert, knowing nothing about how traffic within cities actually works. This will be a much more attractive and practical entrance from downtown to LSP than the rape bridge which was an embarrassing option when people would come from other cities during All Points West and events of that nature. Im excited for this, and look forward to biking this and not having to nearly miss runners on the way. Bring it on.

My understanding from previous statements by Fulop and his administration is that this road bridge will accommodate a pedestrian bridge. Whether that means keeping the current one, or putting in a new one that is integrated with the road extension, is not clear to me. I do trust them to get that right!

Good call on the HBLR crossing. I wonder if the project includes drop down RR crossing signals?

Id imagine one of the main traffic problems will be created back at the Liberty Diner traffic circle, where people coming from the south will need navigate from Caven Point to Burma Road, which is the direct route to the proposed bridge. Traffic circles dont mix well with stupid inattentive aggro drivers which we have no shortage of here

I can't wait for this to open. It's a disgusting contaminated dump behind the hospital. This development is the right step in cleaning that area up.

It's hardly direct to 440 (and I assume you mean 185, which is the spur off 440 that leads to the industrial park area).

Let's not kid ourselves. DTJC will see a huge uptick in Holland Tunnel traffic.

I guess, maybe. But considering the local streets back up anyway I don't know this one extension is going to make it that much faster cutting through JC than it was before. They save 5 min using Jersey Av instead of having to go up Pacific, but they still wait forever on Erie or Marin. The more cars the cut through the longer the wait on the city streets.

Good to see that we as a dense urban city are investing millions of dollars towards pandering to the car, while other cities are investing in public transit infrastructure and moving away from the car.

This is pretty disappointing. The most disappointing element will be the honking cars all over the neighborhood.

I guess it's a done deal, here is a paragraph from a Fulop interview on his one year anniversary.

'Looking ahead to his second year in office, Fulop said he looks forward to the completion of the new DPW complex on East Linden Avenue, a new bike-share program, the completion of a bridge extended Jersey Avenue into Liberty State Park and a marketing campaign for the India Square neighborhood.'
