Jersey City police are investigating a pair of shootings that happened Tuesday night and early yesterday morning.

In the first incident, a Jersey City man was shot twice by a man hiding behind a wall in Mercer Park on the Bayonne border at about 11 p.m. Tuesday and he remained hospitalized in stable condition yesterday afternoon at Jersey City Medical Center-St. Barnabas Health, officials said.

The 32-year-old victim who had been shot twice in the right leg told police he and a friend had left a family gathering and were walking through the park when a male "appeared from behind a stone wall surrounding the park and fired three to four rounds" at him.

The victim and his friend then rode their bicycles several blocks to the victim's mother's apartment where police found them, the report says. The victim was rushed to the Medical Center for treatment of his wounds, which are not considered life-threatening, the report says.

The gunman was described as having short dreadlocks and wearing a blue shirt, the report says.

In the other incident, an 18-year-old Jersey City man was shot in the chest and thigh and he remained hospitalized at Jersey City Medical Center-St. Barnabas, officials said.

Officers responding to Van Nostrand Avenue near Ocean Avenue at 12:46 a.m. found the Arlington Avenue man with his shirt and pants soaked in blood, a police report says.

The victim's brother told police they were riding their bicycles and as they passed Muhammad Ali Park they heard multiple gunshots and he saw his brother fall to the ground, the report says.

The victim's brother said he looked up and saw two males on bicycles near the park and they were heading east on Van Nostrand toward Ocean, the report says.

The victim was rushed to the Medical Center, where doctors told police he had been shot in the right groin area and a second bullet passed through his upper left arm and struck his left rib cage area, the report says.

I wish someone would investigate the police presence on Nelson Ave near Hague St at 1AM Monday morning - many police cars, police dogs, arrests made - but not a word in the Jersey Journal. The neighborhood has a right to know what is happening while they are asleep. Crime in this area is under reported - it's getting bad here, and dangerous.
