What is going in the old thrift-ish store space b/w Skinner's and LITM on Newark Avenue?

Does anyone have any information on the residential development on the NW corner of Monmouth and 7th?

I'm assuming it's row-house multifamily, but does anyone know if it's going to be condo or rental?

It was meant on the Sava Polish diner thread that "the space was being reopened by one of the principals of Buon Appetito". I'm not sure if this means that Buon Appetito is moving back to Grove Street, or if it's a new restuarant that is being opened.

They had signs up previously stating it was going to be brick oven pizza

Anyone know what's happening with the empty store fronts on Grove street (there's one next to A1 deli and the Mxyplyzyk stores)?

There's also a vacant spot near the cigar shop on Grove (across from Orale). I think it used to be a Polish deli/diner. I hope it's not another pizza place!!!!

I was wondering about this place too. I noticed the architects for the renovation are http://agenciegroup.com

They have an impressive portfolio, so I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

The facade has a brick arch into which the door is set - pretty hokey. What we really need is a stroller garage on restaurant row and/or a dinner time day care (evening care?) center.

Probably just another pizza place!

Anyone know what's going into the old balloon/gifts shop on the north side of Newark between Bay and Jersey (close to Box)?

The permits at Europa say refit for restaurant. I thought it was supposed to be a pasta place. If so, we will have pasta, rice balls, and bread on one block and bagels on the next. Maybe we need to rename that stretch of Jersey The Grand Carb Course.

Note: The grocery opening in old JCPD HQ will also feature pasta. [/quote]

The restaurant business is one of the riskiest investments out there. If people want to open a Uzbeki Restaurant and piss their money away then have at it.

The place next to Skinners or LITM (think the signage says Gotham something on the side of the building) should be a boutique hotel along the lines of Wyeth Hotel in Brooklyn or the Ace Hotel in NoMad. Think it would attract a lot of tourists, and locals who have friends visiting but can't accommodate them in their apartments, etc. We already have a decent array of big hotels (Westin, Doubletree, Hyatt, Marriott Courtyard, soon another Marriott in Liberty Harbor) and some extended stay options, but think there should be a boutique hotel on the newly coined/minted Entertainment Restaurant Row.

There's talk (at the Harsimus Cove meetings) of a boutique hotel going in behind it, on Bay Street.

You all ready have hotels in the area albeit illegal. Those Airbnb places that private homes use to "accommodate guests".

Next to the old school house that is now condos?

It's going to be some sort of condo building built by coastal point construction. I knew the developer and he was pretty excited about what they were going to do back in early 2008... but who knows how the original plans have evolved.

76 unit apartment building with ground-floor retail.

Thanks. Website says 11k square feet of retail space. Wiki of Trader Joe's says their average store size is 9,000-12,000 square feet. Hmmm....

I hope and pray this is true!!!!! It would be a much needed addition to the neighborhood!!!

I was told an 'upscale' take-out shop. Sandwiches, prepared food, etc. The facade will be similar to Torico.

While I have your attention - anyone know if the space being built next to C.H. Martin will only be the one story?

This may be old news (and a repetition of a previous post). Here's what's going on on Newark Ave (per seeninjc.com)

Downtown Jersey City Bar and Restaurant News and Updates
A lot has been going on in the bar and restaurant scene in downtown Jersey City, happening too fast to keep the site as updated as Twitter, so here is a quick recap to keep everyone in the loop:

Greene Hook (Formerly Cityside Bistro)

The folks at Light Horse Tavern are opening a gastropub at 70 Greene Street in the spot that used to be Cityside Bistro. Via nemobeatz, founder of Lafayette Nextdoor (check it out!).

Raval at 136 Newark Avenue (Formerly Synergy)

Satis' owner to open a wine and tapas bar. Via nemobeatz, always in the know!

Departed Soles Brewing Company

Jersey City is getting its own brew! Departed Soles Brewing Co., a new company that brews gluten-free & regular craft beers, will be making its home at 150 Bay Street 2A.

Taphaus Biergarten (Crystal Point)

Work on a new beer garden, Taphaus Biergarten, is underway on the ground floor of Crystal Point (2 Second Street). No expected opening date, although their direct NYC waterfront views will surely make it a must-visit watering hole. Via reddit.

Porta

Porta, known for their Asbury Park pizza restaurant and dance club, is still at work on their Jersey City location at 135 Newark Avenue. Opening date is expected to be next month, July 2014. Check out this photo of their pizza oven being delivered! Via @corinne_v.

The Big Straw NJ

The Big Straw's new tea room and cafe at 276 First Street is also still under construction, opening date expected mid-to-end of July 2014. But you can still catch them at Groove on Grove to try their extensive variety of bubble teas!

Koro Koro Rice Ball Cafe

A new sign for Koro Koro Rice Ball Cafe has popped up at 538 Jersey Avenue (between Columbus and Newark, a couple doors down from Choc O Pain). Via ?@stevieshamrocks.

ME Casa Food Truck

ME Casa now has a food truck! Known for their highly praised Puerto Rican and Latin American dishes served at their restaurant at 356 Varick Street, ME Casa now has a mobile kitchen. Keep your eyes peeled for their bright yellow truck!

Talde Jersey City and Carrino Provisions (8 Erie Street)

Still under construction, but floor plans and pricing for the apartment rentals at Telco Lofts (also at 8 Erie Street) are now online.

Update (6/11/2014): The Jersey Journal is reporting a couple of new dining options at the Newport Centre Mall including Panera Bread and Potatopia in the dining pavilion currently undergoing renovations until October 2014.

Update (6/13/2014): BROA Cafe at 279 Grove Street also appears to be very close to opening, possibly within the next couple of weeks or so.

Update (6/16/2014): The new wine and tapas place at 136 Newark Avenue is going to be called Raval according to It's Jersey City.

I believe I read that on JCList.com, actually. It's nothing too interesting or sexy, that's for sure. Unless, of course, you're a regular customer or big fan of PNC Bank.
