Suzy, you might be surprised by someone who will come and pick it up for free. List in the FREE section of Craigslist or in the Jersey City Freecycle. Just state that they have to pick it up and carry it down the stairs. There are a lot of folks struggling who would welcome a mattress - even a five-year-old one. This strategy worked for us one year when we did a move and had to get rid of an old fridge and dishwasher - they were picked up within hours of listing.

Good luck!

Perhaps you can call one of those "Man with a Van" guys and tell them you just need labor to get the mattress down to the street?

Thank you, SteveWilson29. That's going to be plan D. I cannot get the mattress down five flights of stairs out to the street which is why I'm looking for someone to come pick it up. Thanks, though.

I realize that nearly no one will accept mattresses (plus, it's five years old), but does anyone have suggestions for a mattress pick up and disposal that won't cost a fortune?

(I'm on the fifth floor of a walk up, so dragging it down the stairs on my own will not be happening.)

Call JCIA and let them know you're putting it out on a regular garbage day. Wrap it up completely with a plastic drop cloth and the regular garbage service will pick it up.
