Timeline: Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop's first year in office
By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal June 28, 2014 at 10:29 AM July 1 ? Fulop is inaugurated at a ceremony that includes a speech by Gov. Chris Christie, who congratulates Fulop's wife (the mayor is single) July 2 ? Fulop ally Councilwoman at large Joyce Watterman says she plans to hire daughter as her council aide, a job with a $15,000 annual salary plus benefits and pension credits. Fulop pressures her to drop that idea the next day. July 12 ? Fulop announces he's hiring former Gov. Jim McGreevey to run the Jersey City Employment & Training Program, an autonomous agency that runs the city's jobs program. McGreevey is tapped to create a new prisoner re-entry program. July 17 - Less than two weeks into his term, Fulop hands the City Council a revised 2014 budget that includes a nearly 8 percent tax increase. Fulop said his predecessor, former Mayor Jerramiah Healy, whose administration drafted a budget with no tax hike, misrepresented the city's revenue as an election-year ploy (Healy denied the charge). July 18 - Fulop announces he's hiring James Shea, a former NYPD deputy chief, to run the city's new public-safety department. Fulop says Shea's expertise in gangs will help Jersey City lower its crime rate. Read more from the Jersey Journal
