Very clever layout, simple steps to simple living. Will they lure renters as well as potential buyers though ?

It won't be long till these places are considered just another place to hang you hat. At that point they will be priced accordingly whether supply and demand or location, location, location.

New Yorkers are used to living in shoe box apartments. Now, more of them can see what it is like to live in something even smaller. Leasing begins Monday at Carmel Place, the city?s first micro-unit development, a nine-story, modular building at 335 East 27th Street with 55 studios ranging from 260 to 360 square feet.

Resized Image

The development, previously called My Micro NY, has tapped into a desire common among many singles to live alone. The building includes 14 units designated as affordable, for which some 60,000 people applied, or nearly 4,300 applicants per apartment. The lottery for these units was held earlier this month, and winners will be informed in January. The building is set to open on Feb. 1.

As you said, small apartments are not luxurious. They will be cheaper than the norm for the area.

Because they are luxury buildings and the rent will be expensive.

I'm cognizant that young investment bankers, lawyers, doctors, etc. are massively in debt from student loans from their respective elite institutions.

It is, and I know that to a liberal my concerns may seem like proposals for new regulation because that's the solution to everything. But no, I'm merely noting my view of what these new buildings signify. I'm not suggesting that we prevent them from going up. Sometimes, you can see a social trend you don't like that due to the free market are being perpetuated and all you can do is note that you don't like it and explain why. Like Justin Bieber.

if i am comfortable in a 200 sq. foot or 400 sq. foot or 3,000 sq. foot apartment, that is my concern and nobody else's as long as it is safe.

Everything else you said is 100% accurate, and it's telling you haven't received any substantive response, because there is no truthful rebuttal based on facts. The only reply is the typical ad hominem emotional outburst.

This is right, but we also have to be careful. We're a smaller demographic than we might realize. The crazies keep showing up because the large numbers that actually turn out to vote are still religious. I'm atheist living in the Northeast. Looking around, being atheist is nbd, and it is extremely common. Go South or West and very quickly it becomes bizarre.

Now, the Democrats have a similar problem. They have to pander to morons that are only voting for them because of identity based issues such as race or gender or sexual orientation or because they'll get a handout. This in turn turns off many others.

Long story short, we're always picking between the lesser of two evils.

It's the people like Yvonne who want JC to be like a bug in amber, and never change (at least in ways they'd don't approve). What they don't get is that in a modern middle class area of a city, density and quality of life go hand in hand. Density brings transit, services and restaurants etc. We're not talking dense slums, but dense areas of people with money to spend.

I once lived across the street from the Chelsea Hotel, and you could live your entire life without ever having to leave that block. Groceries to live theater were all there. That's city living. And guess what? I actually did have a car and street parked it!

I saw one this weekend while driving down from the Cape, it was about 3 floors with two dudes hanging on the deck. I thought it was super cool, I thought about putting one on an open lot here in town.

This is a free market solution, and I'm fine with it. If you don't like it don't live there. I suspect many others feel the same way, which is why the project continues to move forward.

This sounds to me like saying "sure, people live with a lower standard of living but it is really freeing not to have all the problems associated with a higher standard of living!" With regards to choice, I will wager that no one actually prefers a microapartment to a normal apartment. People just lack the money these days to afford normal apartments and houses, so they rent these POSs. Between high rents and home sale prices, student loans, lack of decent jobs, high taxes on income and instability even for those that have good jobs, you have a mix that basically results in people settling for a crappy lifestyle that is a revival of tenement housing because our society is in decline. But please lets not pretend that this is a good thing or that it is because people want to live like this.

I don't live like that. I'm one of the lucky people that has a great job, decent savings and own a rowhouse in DTJC. But I also know several people who live in tiny apartments, and none of them do it because they want to.

By why is that a lower standard of living? If I could choose between a standard 600-800 sq ft apartment with few amenities and a 400 sq ft apartment with a lot of amenities I would choose the 400 sq ft.

If I could choose between 600-800 sq feet in Montclair vs 400 sq feet in JC. I would choose 400 sq ft in JC.

To me standard of living =/= sq feet of living space. It's part of the equation (up to a point), but it's a very small part of the equation.

If the 400sq foot also allows me more money for travel, well then I would have considered my standard of living to have gone up.

We don't now, nor have we ever, lived in a society where no one ever made trade-offs on the places they lived. That trade-off can be in commuting time, quality of schools, quality of neighborhood, sq ft, amenities or something else.

Why trading off size for something else is particularly upsetting to you, I don't know.

Once again, you don't have to live there, neither does anyone else who puts a premium on space. These will expensive enough that the people who choose to live there will be people with real choices. If they wind up with 400sq feet it will be because they decided that would be better than 600sq feet somewhere else.

Ok, so the House will stay Republican, the Senate will become Republican. Doesn't matter I guess, I'm sure Obama will have a grand time passing his agenda without congressional support.

Out of curiosity, why is the Republican party doomed again?

Actually, it is all relevant to our conversation at hand. You're promoting a typically liberal, big government pro-social engineering point of view. We don't get to choose where we live or who we want to live with. No, we have to build our lives around what you and those like you want. No choices, just mandates from those who don't have the ability to create but only to destroy. You talk to a bunch of people in these threads and the overwhelming majority all say the same thing: "If you don't like our neighborhood, don't live here." You get some support from some guy who lives in Greenville anyway. Does that give you pause? Nope. You just need the political ability to FORCE others to accept what they don't want. And this is why you will lose - because ultimately no one wants to live the way you want us to, and you won't really be able to force us to play your game. You might screw our property values as we, turn JC into the next Newark, but ultimately that's your best case.

This highly amusing and (IMO) accurate link shows why Republicans are dramatically limiting their potential at the present time. This does not mean they are doomed.
