How about getting a folding bike ? They are light, simple to fold, mulitiple gear ratios, and easily stored.

My MTB is locked up in our building's bike storage but my primary road bike is always in my apt on one of these in a corner which saves some space.

I have an outdoor semi-enclosed space but also have space inside (better protection from elements). If you're using it regularly, it would probably be inconvenient having to arrange with Grove Street Bicycles.

Try grove street bikes. I know they have winter storage. Maybe they can do year round options.

Where do you all store your bikes?

I ask this for two reasons.
First, I am really sick of having my bike as a piece of furniture in my apartment.

Second, someone on my block (no idea who) chains her bike to a street sign YEAR ROUND. I try not to be too bothered by it, but it's completely in the way for anyone parking next to it (can't open car door) and I don't see what entitles this person to occupy the sidewalk 356 days/year. Park there for an afternoon, fine, but all year seems a bit much. I know we all have limited space so I may just be overreacting....
