$3.3 million for baby who was badly burned by in-home nurseBy JERSEY CITY -- A young girl and her mother will receive more than $3 million as part of a settlement with an in-home nurse who badly burned an 18-month-old child in 2014. Destiny Abdelmalak, now 4, suffered burns on 18 percent of her body when a nurse, Ellen Ejimkonye, placed her inside scalding hot water, the girl's family said at the time. Ejimkonye faced up to 10 years in prison for the incident that left Destiny with permanent scars, but instead was sentenced to two years probation last year after pleading guilty to child neglect. http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... ned_by_in-home_nurse.html

I'd imagine that for some of us, we are unskilled, lack the competence or even a break from the emotional stress of raising a special needs child 24/7 and show our love and care by paying a specialist person to provide that service ! The parents have done everything in their power and capacity to provide for the child - Any blame sits squarely on the shoulders of the qualified nurse that took on the job. 10/10 to the parents that now seek justice for their child - This must be heart breaking for the parents

I agree with both of you but I'd like to know why a child with special needs was being taken care of by a nurse the parent's had issues with? Not that I was ever faced with their situation but I believe I would have been taking care of my own sick child. This is a totally despicable story.

The nurse needs to lose her license plus any ruling against her if proven, based on the fact she lied and told the mother it was a rash - The nurse would have been well aware what the 'rash' really was.

A Hillside nurse has been charged with scalding a 2-year-old Jersey City girl on Friday, leaving her in critical condition with third degree burns to her ?lower extremities,? officials said today.
The nurse, Ellen Ejimkonye, 30, made her first court appearance today on the charges of aggravated assault on Destiny Malak, endangering the welfare of the child and child abuse, the criminal complaint says. http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... ndition.html#incart_river
