Project Greenville begins a three-day run of its Second Annual Student Art Showcase today, and the range of participants -- from a pre-K student to a college freshman -- is even broader than Elizabeth Deegan, the group?s coordinator, had envisioned. Their original call for submissions noted they were seeking the artwork of students high school-aged or younger. ?It?s important to know when to be more flexible about the guidelines to not only increase the variety present at the exhibit,? says Deegan, ?but also if the whole point is to encourage young people who are developing their interests and style, I don?t want to do anything to deter that.? Project Greenville?s primary goal has been to act as a lightning rod for the arts and a sense of community, both with a Greenville-centric angle. However, one of Deegan?s highlights of collecting work for the student art showcase was unexpectedly getting a submission from outside of Jersey City -- from Newark student Diana Lema. Deegan is also happy to say that participating artists include Greenville students, though she?s certain there?s many more out there. She hopes to do more outreaching that will ?let them know this is happening right in their community, and we hope that they will want to be involved. More here
