With July 4th Fireworks Leaving the Hudson, Jersey City?s Show Will Return
The New York Times By PATRICK McGEEHAN MAY 27, 2014 Macy?s decision to move its Fourth of July fireworks show off the Hudson River this year will not leave residents of northern New Jersey in the dark on that holiday, Jersey City?s mayor said on Tuesday. The mayor, Steven Fulop, who was elected last year, has seized the chance to stage a fireworks show in Liberty State Park, with the Statue of Liberty itself as a backdrop. He even hinted that the display might be broadcast on television at the same time as NBC carries the Macy?s show. ?We?re not in the business of competing with New York City directly,? Mayor Fulop said in an interview. But, he added, ?the window of opportunity opened.? That window was opened by New York?s mayor, Bill de Blasio, when he persuaded Macy?s to bring its fireworks ?spectacular? back to the East River in 2014, after five years on the Hudson. The announcement of that plan last month came as a disappointment to tens of thousands of New Jerseyans, who will no longer have an unobstructed view of the Macy?s show from the west bank of the river. But Mr. Fulop is promising that they will not be let down by the alternative being cooked up: a full day of events in a park that has views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, crowned by what Mr. Fulop said would be ?the biggest fireworks in the state.? Best of all, he said, the event will not cost the taxpayers of Jersey City a thing, since expenses will be borne by corporate sponsors, including Budweiser and Suntex Marinas. Mr. Fulop said that Fox News Channel?s morning show, ?Fox and Friends,? planned to broadcast from the event; he added that he could not say whether Fox intended to broadcast the fireworks as well. A spokesman for Budweiser said that the Independence Day event would be the culmination of a national campaign to raise money for the Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides assistance to the families of military personnel killed or wounded in service. He declined to comment on whether Budweiser would sponsor a broadcast of the fireworks. A spokeswoman for Fox News said the company?s broadcast decisions for the Fourth of July would ?be made closer to that date.? The display would be the first in Jersey City since Macy?s moved its barges, loaded with tens of thousands of shells, onto the Hudson in 2009. Before that, Mr. Fulop said, Jersey City spent as much as $150,000 on its annual fireworks show. But a combination of budget issues and the proximity of the more elaborate Macy?s show put a stop to the displays, he said. Just as hordes of New Jersey residents have taken advantage of the recent Macy?s shows over the Hudson, ?this is a good thing for people on the West Side or the south side of New York City,? Mr. Fulop said. Michael Inglesh, 51, a longtime resident of Battery Park City, said he and his neighbors would probably take in the Jersey City fireworks from their building?s common porch, rather than trek over to the East Side of Manhattan to see the Macy?s display. ?We?ve always enjoyed those fireworks when they?ve launched them from Liberty State Park,? Mr. Inglesh said. ?We will definitely watch them on the Fourth.? From his vantage point, he said, the Jersey City waterfront is a much better launching pad than barges in either the Hudson or East River. ?We couldn?t really see them from our apartment, so we?d have to leave and join the masses on the waterfront,? Mr. Inglesh said. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/28/nyr ... ve-its-own-show.html?_r=0

Thank you comrade Di Blasio for making this happen by taking Macy's fireworks to the East River!

Haven't went to LSP to enjoy the fireworks in almost a decade.
Happy to see they are bringing this back and adding rides, food and making an event out of it. The fireworks in LSP were overshadowed by Macys but it was nice to have something smaller that was our own and had the capacity to fit many residents.

(From Mayor Steven Fulop Email Distributed Today)
I hope you had a great Memorial Day weekend, including taking a moment to reflect on the sacrifices of our service men and women who protect our way of life every day at home and around the world. Now that summer season is here it's time to look forward to the 4th of July and I'd like to share some exciting news about a great celebration getting set for Jersey City in Liberty State Park. Through the generous support from our partners Suntex Marinas, Budweiser, and Fox & Friends, along with a strong assist from the State of New Jersey and the superintendent of Liberty State Park, this year Jersey City will host the Freedom and Fireworks Festival, a free concert followed by a large fireworks display in honor of the 4th of July. The Festival will also feature a Taste of Jersey City with great food offered by local establishments, children rides and local musicians. We anticipate over 100,000 people joining us for this celebration. While the day is about having a good time, as we conclude Memorial Day commemorations, I want to highlight the most important aspect of this celebration. Budweiser will make a huge donation to Folds of Honor during the festivities. Folds of Honor is an organization that assists the spouses and children of fallen veterans with educational scholarships. You can learn about their great work here http://www.foldsofhonor.org/mission Jersey City is the birthplace of the American dream, a gateway to opportunity, the home of Ellis Island, and a melting pot of cultures so it makes sense we will be at the forefront of America?s birthday. In the next few weeks I will be sending out more information about the Festival. In the meantime, I'd like you to start dusting off your BBQ, get your chairs and blankets ready and invite your friends and family to Jersey City to celebrate the 4th of July in one of our nation?s most culturally and ethnically diverse communities. See you soon! Steven
