The believe DTJC and Hamilton Park fall under the East District.

HP is part of DTJC. You mean VVP?

Really, just dont do it.

Ha - that's only if you read jclist!

I've lived in HP for 7 years and love it.

I've only felt uncomfortable once and oddly enough it was on Wayne... walking with a few friends a dude standing on a stoop called us faggots and spat at us... this was probably 3 years ago though.

I will say - like any city - you do have a responsibility to stay aware of your surroundings and not set yourself up to be a victim.

As many have said, both general areas are pretty safe. As you go west of the parks, it's probably somewhat less safe (although, still generally safe). As a very general rule of thumb, the more east you go (i.e. closer to the river), the less crime there is and real estate prices increase.

How much more in DT is there "to do & see" ? I grant it that Downtown is cute, cozy, and walkable but it can be congested at times and weather beaten. I hate the traffic flow and parking is horrendous. The Heights is much larger so it is more spread out. You have to expand yourself up here to catch the action & activity.

Grove Street area still seems to be going through a comparative late night crime wave the past couple of months. A guy killed outside a deli, a couple of street muggings, and the sexual assault last weekend. I don't consider the neighborhood unsafe, but if I lived anywhere near VVP, I'd be at the local JCPD Captain's meeting asking them to sort their act out.

Anywhere in DTJC is very safe. I have been living here since 2001, when I moved to DTJC as a young 20 something straight out of college. I have never felt unsafe and I would make the walk to/from the train station at all hours of the day.

The parking near HP is certainly much better than near VVP. Both are great, I actually prefer (even though I live near HP) because it's a bit more central and easier to get to all areas of JC from there.

These areas are about as safe as a city this size can be. Not sure why Wayne and Barrow get bad raps as myself and many friends walk down these streets late at night with no issue. Of course, like any municipality crime does (rarely) occur, but all in all a great neighborhood!

Nothing to add except that it seems kind of quaint when people from outside the area worry about the safety in neighborhoods of JC with some of the highest home values/median incomes/etc. in the area. I talked to someone from Montclair recently who had to reassure her parents that she would be safe going to Grove St...during the day. These outdated perceptions may be the only thing keeping rent cheaper than NYC at this point.

Thanks again!
maybe at like, 3am. I wouldn't worry about it much even then. All of Downtown is really quite safe, except for maybe by the tunnel.

Welcome to the neighborhood. I think you can get a reasonable 1 bedroom in a brownstone in DTJC near vanvorst park for that price. I have a friend living in one right now on York st and I think she is paying 1700- does not include parking though (i think she pays for parking at Edison parking lot a few blocks away). Rentals in my building are about 2300 plus.

I think DTJC is great (i live here) and may be biased but I think it has many more choices for restaurants and easy accessability to the PATH trains.

Hamilton Park is also nice but a little farther away from the PATH station if it matters to you. If you only plan on going to nyc on weekends, then perhaps you could also consider Hamilton Park. Some may disagree but i prefer a 5 minute walk to the PATH train versus a 10-15 minute one. Nice leafy area. I don't think the prices in HP are any different from DTJC.

Hello,

As you might have read today on this forum, there was a sexual assault reported at the corner of York and Grove a few days ago.

http://jclist.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=32003

Another violent crime I remember from 2008/2009 when I lived on Coles Street. A bodega located one block away from my apartment was robbed, and the owner was shot and killed.

But at least in my perception (perhaps there are others who agree), violent crimes in Downtown Jersey City are extremely rare. I've never personally experienced or witnessed a crime more serious than littering.

I live on Van Vorst Park, and I see many people with young kids all the time. Even at midnight, I have never personally felt unsafe here.
