Yes, that is understood - that is why it was done. But in reality, the traffic is bad in the morning and not in the evening coming off turnpike into DT JC. That's my point. Thanks!

The cops are definitely warranted in the morning, for which I encountered crazy traffic earlier this week. But later in the day - not necessary. There is not nearly as much traffic in the evening rush hour.

It's an age-old argument over whether cops should enforce the letter of the law, or the spirit. Different countries and cultures have different leans. In the US, cops tend to use their discretion and err on the side of the latter, if a lawbreaker isn't causing harm or being a nuisance.

Actually, all those seem pretty reasonable to me. I have friends who live in geneva and in their apartment building, they are assigned a specific day to use the laundry. Also, a whistle blowing culture is totally encouraged.

Rules exist for a reason. Breaking small rules leads to breaking bigger rules... you don't want that to happen, do you?

The people who need to grow up are the ones complaining that folks walk against the light right in front of the cops. Get a life.

They should track the speed of other cars and complain to the police when a driver goes 1 mph over, haha.

I did in all the posts I've posted.

Yeah, I did come on here to bitch about it - it's relative to the topic thread. Cop in car was too far away when I turned around so I couldn't have memorized or taken a photo (phone was in bag) in time. Also, it's "y-o-u".

Regardless of what they're doing (or not doing), maybe it's time to reduce the police presence at rush hour? Based on what I can see, the downtown carpocalypse hasn't happened, and that overtime bill must be getting pretty high.

Sorry that happened to you. Yesterday, i was at the very same stoplight. 2 police were standing on the corner chatting and a group of ladies just walked into the red light (despite a big sign in english that says Delayed Walk).

I don't understand why these people don't follow rules and why police just stand there ignoring people who are putting themselves in danger.

It would be nice if one of them could take a stroll in front of Carmine's on Mallory Ave and start ticketing all the cars double parked in the bike lane.

I had my FIOS wires torn down by a truck the other day. Verizon arrived the next morning to fix it and it just so happens Johnny's Excavating is preparing our street for sewer work. They are just laying out the cut lines for the jackhammers and the Verizon guy is not in their way but they complain to the cop there that Verizon guy doesn't need a permit but they do. First of all, Johnny's had taken all the street parking and were closing it completely at times. The Verizon guy wasn't impeding them or traffic. Scared cop calls supervisor from HQ to sort it out. Supervisor actually mulls over stopping my FIOS repair. Mind you, I haven't even spoken to the cops but I'm preparing to explode if the cop does stop the repair work. Verizon guy talks sense into supervisor and reminds him that he actually installed HIS FIOS in Bayonne recently. So ultimately, the cop was going to bone a resident over a city contractor getting his knickers in a twist. I promise you I probably would have spent the night in jail had he gone through with it. Supervisor cop made the right decision but it was purely based on good old backslapping BS.

I watched someone blow through an entire red light heading north with a JC cop in the turn lane facing east... Couldn't have cared less. You wouldn't think of doing that on the West Coast.

I regularly see them at 6th & Marin - they've even stopped traffic for me to cross... much appreciated too.

That intersection is so dangerous... numerous close calls when people are making the left from either direction onto Marin.

The problem is that when they are actually doing work you don't "see" that.

Maybe because of my odd schedule, I don't see them in action at rush hour, but all afternoon I drive around downtown and for the most part all I see are officers leaning against their motorcyles (or whatever inanimate object happens to be nearby). Many times I have seen cars double park or park on a yellow curb or otherwise impede traffic by breaking a law and...nothing. Cops just stand there. I don't live in JC, so it's not my tax dollars going to waste, but it's sort of infuriating just from a citizen point of view.

Usually, cops are just talking to each other or busy eating donuts. I don't really see them doing anything at the cross walks or even preventing people walking against the wrong colored light.

Is the theory that their mere presence will intimidate people into following the rules? If so, it's not working.

Someone should make a video of them not doing anything and send it to a local TV station.

Because of the lane closures on the Pulaski Skyway heading towards the Holland Tunnel. They anticipated more traffic on our residential streets. They deployed the police to help traffic flow.
