That 78 W traffic should be somehow illegal, no one should get caught in hours of traffic just because they went for a sunday afternoon drive without checking a traffic map. At the very least there should be a "last chance" warning somewhere.

I was heading to fish in Staten I and took the Tpk to 440, I was lucky, the traffic started just before 14A exit.

Like others said last time it happened..there was construction on the 78 west extention bridge it was one lane. The Bayonne toll entrance was backed up. Looks like drivers booked it to Communipaw to get on the TP.

What happened? I had a 10 minute trip turn into thirty minutes because of all the traffic.

The construction on the 78 bridge combined with the closing of the Bayonne bridge leaves 440 to Communipaw bridge on route 1 as the first alternative to get across.

This has also been my experience. The lights are not timed well. There are two stoplights between westbound Communipaw and the 1/9 truck route. The first one turns green well before the second one, so only a few cars can go. And cars often end up blocking 440 while waiting for the second light. Even before 7 am, westbound Communipaw is backed up. This problem is new as of the Pulaski closure.

Saturday, I tried to take the Turnpike out of JC. Got on at Liberty Science Center, saw it was backed up because of construction over the bridge and got right off to Garfield. Garfield was backed up, so I made a left onto Stegman thinking I'd catch up to Communipaw farthter west.

Took Stegman to JFK, only to find the police were preventing people from making lefts onto Communipaw. Went further on JFK past the synagogue and made a left (Bentley?) then waited for a long while to get onto Westside Ave before I could make a right back onto Communipaw. At that point I was ready to stop at New Park for a drink.

It took maybe another half an hour to get to the 440 intersection from there.

Ugly ride.

We inbound on 78 coming back from a fishing trip around 5:30 and saw that insane backup westbound. We felt seriously sorry for anyone caught in it. You still came out way ahead doing what you did.

It's like they're determined to make driving here as difficult as possible by constantly screwing with the limited access routes. Not that I EVER go in the covered roadway eastbound, but did they really have to do it at the same time as the Skyway was closed? That's now another constant disaster.

I've noticed how awful the traffic there can be way before the Pulaski shutdown.

That doesn't account for everyone's experiences on other days. Something has gone seriously wrong here. JFK, Westside and Bergen were a mess today too at 3:30.

I've seen far better traffic in Manhattan than JC in this area. I have to say, I think JC should lose it's love affair with 2 way avenues. If JFK were 1 way north, Bergen and Westside were 1 way south, and the lights were timed for like 20 mph, traffic around there would move much better. Same thing for the Heights: Palisade, Baldwin/Webster, Central & Summit should be 1 ways the whole way too.

And to head off the "don't be car centric" thing, this is getting MORE urban and designing traffic like a city rather than a suburb. It would also make the bike lanes far safer.

Was driving that way yesterday and it took me a good half hour to get from Bayonne border to Communipaw.

I avoid 440 and only travel up there when absolutely necessary. I was stuck on Communipaw b/w West Side Ave and 440 for a half-hour once.

Don?t know if you traveled on the weekend. The traffic on rt 440 was bad I never saw it backed up like that on a weekend.

From Bayonne near Country Village all the way to Communipaw was hardly moving. I thought maybe it was the timing of the Culver light which has always been bad but the traffic was also backed up after Culver to Communipaw.

And those a-holes speeding in the emergency lane are bad news.

I think the Wittpenn Bridge was closed this weekend so could have been people trying to get to Fish House Road via Communipaw/1&9.

Getting down 440 to Lowes used to be no big deal, now it's impossible. Getting over the bridge, never great, now is crazy also. It seems like they changed the lights to create "airlocks", so traffic never just flows through in any direction. Anyone else notice this?
