Thank you Jersey City List and everyone who recommended Byron Hutchinson / Hutch Mechanical. We just had him fix our heat - reliable, honest, and professional. He knows his stuff, and patiently explained what was going on and what he did. Highly recommend.

Just wanted to say thank you JC LIST for recommending Byron Hutchinson! Responded quickly to my call, came to house on time, explained everything thoroughly, nice guy and fair price.

Carmine Aumenta sent one of his son's to install a kitchen sink in my unit. The kid did an excellent job, my sink is looking great over a year later.

But I paid $700. And that was after Carmine initially quoted me $750 over the phone. I'm no plumber but for a few hours of work, albeit quality work, and a sink which sells at Home Depot for far less than the quoted price, I am feeling like I overpaid.

But, at least the job was done well.

Just wanted to say thanks to whoever recommended Byron Hutchinson as a plumber. I had an emergency leak and dude came out right away and took care of it, as well as putting in a new faucet etc. I am going to use him again for some stuff in the future. Thx JC List!

Loved carmine until he totally bungled a job with our furnace and expected payment. Had to pay him a load of money for making a mess plus the money for another plumber to fix it. He screwed us royally. Beware

I need to post "KUDOS" for Byron from "Hutch Mechanicals"...
Got his name from this forum, and had an antique plumbing issue from the origins of my house (1929) Byron was efficient, friendly, knowledgeable ( "Standard stopped manufacturing your toilet bowl in 1933, ma'am..."!). His prices were fair, his work was...spotless. He even found a drip in my basement I knew NOTHING about, which he will be back to investigate later this week.
I worked with Carmine Aumenta before: he did a good job for me for one problem, but with my toilet issue he sent out a guy who basically told me I had to rip out my entire bathroom...then never came back to discuss the ?"WTF??" issues.
I'd recommend Byron to my daughter, if that's a recommendation.
GO HUTCH MECHANICAL!!!!:)

Per recommendations I came across on here, I contacted Byron Hutchinson too. I actually called on a Sunday evening expecting to leave a message.

Byron answered, we set up an appointment for the very next morning, and he arrived on time (which was impressive within itself).

He was super honest and obviously very knowledgeable. Spent time with me going over all of my options.

I definitely recommend him. I'm relieved to have found my "go to" plumber!

Byron (Hutch Mechanical) is a GREAT guy!

Last summer, I was in a pretty serious bind right before I was supposed to leave the country for a month. Byron came on the same day (very rare for a plumber in these parts) and, thereafter, went above and beyond. My minor plumbing disaster even required a little bit of carpentry work, which Byron gladly offered to take care of.

Since then, Byron has done some work on my shower, installed a new toilet, replaced a bathroom faucet, and has installed a garden hose spigot for me (along with necessary valves and piping).

So nice to find a skilled plumber with a great personality.

More than glad to answer any other questions anyone might have. Feel free to PM me.

Another vote for Byron of Hutch Mechanical. We had a pipe burst in our house and he was on scene repairing it in two hours ! He's very responsive and reliable. Recommended.

I had hutch mechanical before so I asked him to come again for another repair. He came within a day to give an estimate. However, he failed to return to fix the problem, despite my follow-up calls. He said he was still working on the previous job and could not make it. I made another appointment with him, and he failed to show up again, this time BLAMING me that I didn't make such appointment. I asked him when was the appointment supposed to be, and he couldn't even give the time! Then I gave him a THIRD chance, and guess what, he immediately demanded a higher price, 33% more than what was agreed before. To summarize, he is UNPROFESSIONAL, UNRELIABLE, and UNTRUSTWORTHY.

+1. Agree with everything posted.

Had Byron replace a water heater, install a dishwasher, and replace a couple of faucets. Great plumber. Highly recommend.

Hi - would appreciate recommendations for a plumber (?) to replace our kitchen sink (from cast iron to granite composite). Will probably need to cut the laminate counter to fit the slightly bigger sink.

Looking for someone with experience who knows how to do this right (hoping to preserve the existing counter top, so someone who knows how to cut laminate accordingly, and all that).

Thanks in advance!

Happy Holidays!

Another positive review for Byron Hutchinson of Hutch Mechanical. Not sure how many that makes. I used him to replace a hot water heater based on feedback from JCL.

Called him at 7:30 pm on his cell, he said he could be there the next morning at 09:00 (it was not a dire emergency). He showed up on time with an assistant. We all looked at the heater and agreed the tank was leaking and needed to be replaced (it was a 10+ yr old AO Smith).

Byron got us a Rheem water heater from GPS at a lower price than I would have paid Home Despot for a lower quality brand. After the cost of the unit and his installation/removal of the old unit, the total cost of the job ended up being reasonable.

I didn't want to spend money on a water heater, but I'd give Byron high marks for being prompt, quick and reasonably priced. The unit works fine but he left his card and told me to call and he'd be right over if there were any issues and he sounded sincere.

I wanted to add another positive review for Byron at Hutch Mechanical. My experience with him was excellent. I found him to be extremely professional, diligent, and responsive. He fixed an emergency issue (leak) for us and also did some routine maintenance on our boilers. He found another potential issue and pointed it out without creating any pressure to have him fix it - just gave us the information and let us decide what we wanted to do. Absolutely no drama or upsell. I really appreciated his honesty and work ethic.

I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone looking for an experienced plumber and will definitely be using him as needed again.

Not to hi-jack the thread, but I just wanted to give my 2 cents about PSEG. They are horrible. Besides waiting and waiting for them to show up, the tech worked on the unit for 4 hours, changing every part in the unit. He then told me that they could not fix the unit and I had to replace it. ( even though he changed everything) They told me that they would give me terms over 36 months with no interest. After calculating the payments, their price was almost $3200 higher then what the furnace should have cost.
Sorry to vent, but its been 5 years since that incident and it still bothers me.

My water heater broke this weekend, I rent out my condo in JC and live in NYC. After wasting an entire day waiting for PSEG, I called Byron at Hutch Mechanical. He came the day I called to check it out and worked around my schedule. He replaced the following day and even came into the city to pick up the check to save me another trip back to JC. I was very impressed with his work ethic and professionalism, after such a poor experience with PSEG.

Gabe Ambrozia & Sons were recommended to me by Royal Heating (who I LOVE). I'm very happy with them. They usually answer the phone and call you back and show up when they're supposed to with everything they need. Pricing isn't dirt cheap but I've gotten more expensive quotes. I'm happy with them. They seem fair and honest. Clearflow was in the news awhile back for ripping off Habitat for Humanity for $15,000 so, tread carefully there.

I first discovered this list when I moved back here in July and was searching for a reasonably priced, decent plumber. I took the recommendations here on other threads for Byron and I was satisfied with his work. His pricing was fair, he was willing to negotiate and he was prompt and did a good job.

Can anyone recommend a dependable plumber in JC? I've been dealing with a guy from Clear Flow who does good work but his quotes are a bit steep. To say the least. He just charged us close to $260+ (parts and labor) for fixing a leaking toilet bowl. Any piece of advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks, neighbors!

I've used Byron once when I was out of town and couldn't take care of the issue myself. He took care of the problem, was professional and I could definitely recommend him.

I am recently returned to JC and when I left in 2006, this kind of list didn't exist, so finding contractors and tradesmen was rough. This time around, I knew there had to be this kind of resource, so I searched the archives for a plumber and used Byron at Hutch Mechanical because of what I read here. I would like to add my compliments and appreciation for Byron here. He came right away, negotiated his price with me, listened, gave me good advice, negotiated another price for additional work, came just when he said he would the following day, brought his OWN FAN, dropped his price when he couldn't entirely fix my problem and told me to call him immediately if things went south and I wasn't satisfied. Overall, as a single woman, I felt listened to, respected, and not taken advantage of, and I feel that he did the best work he could do under the circumstances that were not of his making nor his power to control. His price was reasonable. I would use him again and definitely recommend him to others.

I know some people have been asking about plumbers, and I can't recommend Byron enough:

Hutch Mechanical
201-888-4752

He's reasonable, easy to access, and seems to really care about solving your problems. We've used him for sump pumps, toilets, boiler and hot water heaters among the many times we flooded. He came the other day to work on our toilet, in the midst of us dealing with the flooding cleanup. He hung around to see if we needed anything.

When we thought we had issues with our sumps and hot water heater later on, he came that night and fixed our pilot light (thankfully, the only issue) at no charge and then came the next day to check on our pumps. He cleaned them out and they are perfect again.
