There are over 40 pieces of artwork, and the music is good.

Project Greenville has established itself with a unique setting for its group art exhibits, but the ?Small Works, Big Ideas? show taking place today through Sunday won?t be in the outfitted shed behind 128 Winfield Ave. Instead, the venue will be in the house itself.

Elizabeth Deegan, the main Project Greenville coordinator, says this is due to the ?lengthy winter and the precarious ice situation.? Canceling the JC Fridays event for either reason wasn?t an option for her or her cohorts, whose goal is for Project Greenville events to be part of more frequent showcases for artists and for arts-based gatherings in the area.

But is Project Greenville really tapping into the locale from which it takes its name?

?I am happy to say that while we get artists and musicians from all over, I always meet new people from right here in the neighborhood coming to check out what we have going on,? says Deegan. ?Often they might know some one who is showing their work or will have heard about it from a neighbor or seen it mentioned in the paper or via a flyer at a local business, etc.

?So while we are doing well with getting folks who don?t know Greenville firsthand to have an excuse to come check it out if they haven?t before,? Deegan adds, ?we are also providing a place for neighborhood people to cross paths and chat with each other beyond just a hello from across the street or a good morning as you pass on the way to work.?

In addition to the very slight location change (a dozen feet or so), this Project Greenville event is distinguished by its open theme for art, as long as it fit into a 12? by 12? framework. The work on display will run the gamut from drawings, paintings and photography to an instillation. The roster of artists whose work will be shown is as follows: George and Margaret Smith; Jeanne Barrett; Jim Legge; Fermin Mendoza; Pat Olsen; Lucy Rovetto; Gregory Stone; Serge Limontas Salisbury; Margeaux Lucas; Aena Son; Chris Capaci; Maria Ulacia; Jill Stasium; and Mira Prinz.

There?ll also be special musical guests through the weekend, including appearances from Drum and Tantrum and Project Greenville stalwarts DIYGFY.

The event, which runs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. this evening, tomorrow and Sunday, is free and will also include light refreshments. It takes place at 128 Winfield Ave. between Ocean Avenue and Old Bergen Road. For more information, check out www.projectgreenville.webs.com.
