My roof is leaking badly due to ice dam and frozen leader to the gutter. Called my insurance company and explained my emergency situation, water dripping indoor, impact to 3 floors.
My insurance company called in A. Molly, they do all kinds of work including clearing snow off of roof and melting ice off of and unblocking the leader, according to my insurance company. But because many others are also having a problem with their roofs, I'm in que and they are planning to come on Friday at the earliest. (I don't know how much they charge, they will bill my insurance company direct for payment). A. Molly 31 Vose Ave #243 South Orange, NJ 07079 973-674-3300 (phone) 973-674-3301 (fax) www.amollycompany.com Good luck everybody. p.s. Last week and other times before, I have gone up to my roof to clear snow but with icy/slippery conditions on the sidewalks yesterday and today, I did not want to push my luck and take on the risk. I'm leaving it to professionals with harness and proper protective gear.

I would also advise using great caution in adding another 200 lbs of weight to an already cracking/over taxed roof...... I would definitely try and keep my body weight evenly dispersed (ie crawling around not standing up)

our roof is unfortunately leaking a bit due to the snow but can't be fixed until all snow is gone and the ground it totally dry (no one in their right mind would climb a 40 ft ladder in this mess)
if you did have internal access to the roof, the roofers said that the best thing to do is try and break up any ice around the drains since that is the biggest cause of damage (water seeping in since it has no place to flow)

Leave like an inch of snow or so. Or try to be as careful as possible to not let the edge of the shovel scrape the roof deck.
You don't want to tear your roof membrane.

Wow, suggesting people go onto their ice-crusted roofs. Sanity check?

A statewide warning is being issued to owners of homes and commercial buildings to remove the snow from their rooftops.
The advisory comes after dozens of roof collapses were reported amid last week's snowstorms. Yesterday afternoon, another collapse was reported at a warehouse in Passaic. Officials say the roofs were not designed to handle the stress induced by the heavy, frozen snow.http://newjersey.news12.com/

Because so many cars have been damaged when snow or ice flies off a car and smashes the windshield or bodywork of a car following. People have died because of this, and it became law in NJ a year or two ago. Of course, if it's parked you don't have to do it!

Because when that snow hardens and then flies off while the car is in motion, it could cause serious damage to another car and possibly an accident. I was on the Turpike extension last month and saw a chunk of ice fly off the roof of a van and crack the windshield of the car behind it. Not a small crack either - but a spider web. I was driving one lane over from the car that got nailed and missed getting nailed myself by inches.

Just called the roofing company. If they can get access from inside,
they will come and shovel off your roof -- charge you for it, but ... Our top roof has no hatch but there is a flat roof (yes reflective) over an an addition. We were afraid to go out on it. Just climbing out the window was too slippery. We'll see what they say when they get here

Cleared part of the parapet first. Then I would pile new snow on it. Then standing on the parapet, drop it to the sidewalk below (making sure I wasn't going to hit anyone). Luckily I have an extra-wide sidewalk on one side of the building. So now I have a really big pile of snow there. Going to sleep better tonight. Though I should check my other buildings this weekend. I have one on Palisade ave that might have an issue (high parapets). In previous storms, that building is so windswept that the snow rarely piles up much on the roof. Not sure about this time though...

I'd be more worried about falling up on a 'flat' roof in conditions like this.
The whole sheet of ice could slide with you on it. Robin.

The heavy snowfall that socked the region Thursday has led to a string of roof collapses in towns across Bergen County, officials said. In New Milford, the ceiling at the ShopRite on River Road buckled, prompting authorities to close the store and call an engineer to evaluate the structure. Workers had blocked the parking lot and police roped off the entrance late Friday morning. Hackensack firefighters said nobody was hurt when the roof of a vacant house on Passaic Street collapsed under the wet snow Friday morning. Roof collapses were also reported at a Waste Management facility in Hillsdale and the Frank W. Gavlak Elementary School gym in Wallington. Authorities said there were no reported injuries. The Ridgefield Park Bureau of Fire Prevention reported a partial roof collapse at the unoccupied St. Mary?s church hall Thursday during the storm.

The typical steel hatch has little or no insulation. So there's probably a lot more snow on the roof than there is on top of the hatch. If your husband wants dinner tonight he'll figure it out...!

On a similar note-clean the snow off the roof of your car-not only is it the law, but it's what you should do.

Nobody in their right mind would want to run a ladder to a roof with this ice on the ground! Check with your neighbors at a similar roof height and one of them probably has a hatch.
Like, MDM, I have a reflective silver coating and it's a downside for melting in the winter but a major plus in the summer heat. I don't have parapets because our common walls are all masonry but my neighbor is 2' higher than I am and I got a major drift. I never mind it in a regular winter, since snow is actually an insulator when the outside air temp is below freezing, but this stuff is HEAVY. On the positive side, it's melting like nuts out there today thanks to some sunshine. If I figure that I'm melting a gallon a minute (and it sounds like it is) then my roof load is lightening at a rate of about 500 pounds per hour. And then comes tomorrow's snowstorm. Grrr...

This is what I saw last night. The snow on top of the table gives you an idea of the overall depth.
We are supposed to get more snow tonight and tomorrow. This is like a winter from my early childhood back in the 70's.
