Fulop talks ethics, 2017 governor's race at Rutgers

By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal
February 13, 2014 at 1:24 PM

NEW BRUNSWICK ? Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop shared his thoughts on ethics in government with over 200 Rutgers students and faculty members Tuesday night, weighing in on his new administration, Gov. Chris Christie?s recent troubles and the 2017 governor?s race.

Fulop, 36, appeared as a guest of the Arthur J. Holland Program on Ethics and Government, named after a former Trenton mayor who died in 1989. The Jersey City mayor told the crowd that Holland, mayor for 26 years, set the bar for ethics in government ?as high as is humanly possible.?

?He had the ability to show that government can be effective and at the same time do it in an honest and ethical manner,? he said.

Most the evening, which was recorded for C-Span and a university YouTube channel, was devoted to a Q&A with audience members. One asked whether accusations of political intimidation hurled at Christie have Fulop concerned about separating his own political career from his job of running city government.

Fulop said it?s a tough task, adding that ?sometimes? individuals come to see him in his office and say ?inappropriate things.?

?In Jersey City, we are very, very conscious of trying to separate our politics from our government,? he said.
