Just going to put this out there - I know using salvage boxes from the curb is tempting. But those can possibly have bugs in them. I did it once and brought them inside to find a roach. Fortunately it was just one (who knows if there were eggs?) and I got all of the boxes out of my place before using them and putting my belongings in contact with possible bugs. But, understand the risk. If you can find someone who just moved themself and you can take the boxes directly from their house to yours, it's probably cleaner than ones that have been sitting who knows where for who knows how long, even if they look ok.

Home Depot has the best deal on boxes that I've come across. Small are .79 each and large are $1.29. They also sell TV boxes but I'm not sure the price on those.

What's the best place to buy moving boxes near downtown? Staples? Moishe's?

If you go to the large condo/apartment buildings, maintenance can usually hook you up from their recycling areas. You'll find it a great resource.

Great advice, and particularly true during the first week of each month, when move-ins are happening. If you don't want to have to talk to someone, just follow Annod's advice to swing by DTJC buildings on Thursday evenings. LOTS OF BOXES always out on the curb. But, by then, some boxes may be damaged by improper folding, or because they were cut to make them flat or smaller, so keep that in mind.

If you go behind the high-rises in downtown on Thursday evening, you will find a lot of boxes put out for recycling.

WEST place recyclables at curb Sunday evening between 7:00 p.m. & 10:00 p.m. only
SOUTH place recyclables at curb Monday evening between 7:00 p.m. & 10:00 p.m. only
NORTH place recyclables at curb Tuesday evening between 7:00 p.m. & 10:00 p.m. only
EAST place recyclables at curb Thursday evening between 7:00 p.m. & 10:00 p.m. only

For free boxes go to Super Buy-Rite across from Home Depot. Go to the front of the store the boxes are stacked against the window. They are clean and sturdy since they had to hold bottles of liquor.

My favorite moving boxes are the ones used for gallon jugs of cheap wine. Very sturdy, and come with a 4-way divider that can be kept in to pack small items, or removed to hold larger stuff. Perfect size for LPs, if that's your thing.
Liquor City on 440 is a great source for these; they work best if you can avoid breaking them down for transport/storage.

Try Red Feast liquor on Columbus, they have hundreds of boxes out on recycling night. They are really nice guys there as well. Village Liquors on Grove also has a shitload of boxes out for recycling too. Good luck with the move.

Moishe's has a box exchange program. I haven't used it on the receiving end, but I listed my moving boxes there after my last move, and someone called within a day or so and picked them up. You don't have to be a Moishe's customer to use the program.

We have recently become the #1 spot for our friends and neighbors to stop by when they need boxes for moving. So if you're willing to trek over to our shop, we generally have a bunch of beer boxes that we're not doing anything with. Thursday is recycling night, so Monday-Wednesday is when we have the most.

I am moving in a couple weeks and need some sturdy boxes. We currently live near the Grove Street path and don't have access to a car, any ideas where we might find some free boxes in the neighborhood? I've looked while walking and all of the stores seem to only put out cardboard that has been ripped apart (not just folded) to break it down, or really small boxes. We might just end up buying some cheap ones online, but thought it was worth checking here first.

I'm 99% sure we have a bunch in our basement from our recent move that I am dying to get rid of-I'll confirm tonight. I had bought a bunch at Uhaul and I think my husband felt really bad about throwing them out so he has them all packed up nicely down there.

You can have them if you want. PM me your email.

uhaul on 1/9 has a free section when you go inside. Probably not too many, but their boxes are pretty sturdy.

MCGINLEY SQUARE SUBWAY!!! FREE!!!

Was awesome when we moved in December. Boxes of all sizes, barely used, and a never ending supply brought out each day.

We joked that our move was brought to you by Subway. Pack Fresh!

Moishe's has a used box exchange. I used it to get rid of some of my boxes after I moved two years ago.

http://www.moishesboxexchange.com/

Otherwise, I'd recommend ordering boxes from Uline. Significantly cheaper than buying them locally. They deliver.
