A Jersey City cab driver was punched in the face and robbed of his day?s fares by a man and a woman he picked up at Journal Square early Sunday, Jersey City police said.

Jersey City police officers patrolling near Monitor Street and Communipaw Avenue at 3 a.m. saw a yellow taxi idling at the intersection.

The cabbie, 67, told officers he stopped the taxi to let out the man, who handed the driver $20 to pay for his $12 fare.

But the assailant pulled open the cabbie?s door, ripped off his glasses and demanded all the driver?s cash, police said.

The cab driver told officers he pleaded with the man not take his earnings for the day.

The attacker then struck the cabbie in the left eye, grabbed the money and fled with the female, said police.

The victim was left dazed and unable to stand because of the attack, police said.

Officers flagged down another taxi driver in the area, who helped translate for the driver.

The cab driver was taken to the Jersey City Medical Center for treatment.
