User, I'm confused. Did you explain somewhere I missed why they aren't going to spend a lot of the time while you're at work seeing the sights across the river? I love JC as much as anybody, but am realistic about our comparative tourist appeal.
If they've never been here they really should do the Circle Line with a picnic from Hero Boy, Empire State, see museums, the Bronx Zoo, and get pastrami at Katz's for lunch. If it's a nice day take the subway to coney island! Since they sound young they might not mind waiting at the TKTS booth for some cheap Bwy. There's a lot more to NYC than the nightlife it sounds like you'll show them later on.

Thanks everyone! I just spoke with one of my cousins and they are interested in hearing court cases (I know odd but he is in law school) does JC allow people to sit in the court rooms during court proceedings sort of like "Peoples Court" or do you have to be somewhat related to the case to sit in? Thanks!
I really like the Bentley & Church idea, JC does have some outstanding homes and churches.

If you enjoy history, then take a tour of the old cemeteries, if you enjoy architecture, then there are many examples of church buildings in JC that rival any church in NYC. By the way, Holy Rosary is the oldest Italian Catholic Church in the state and St. Anthony is the old Polish Catholic Church in the state. Both as wonderful architectural styles.

Abbeys on Monmouth for Hookah.
Off the beaten track - 9th west of Brunswick path beside train tracts -interesting wildlife like rabbits, snakes, skunks, etc. Can also probably get up on 6th street embankment too...think there's a spot up it near Marin. Falcon spotting - Not sure when the birds breed at 101 Hudson, but guess it might be around that time. http://www.conservewildlifenj.org/blog/tag/falcon-cam/ Helicopter rides from NY Waterway pier at Paulus Hook. Liberty Humane society. Anywhere on Grove for breakfast/lunch if weather is nice. Jersey City cemeteries. Yes seriously.

If they are interested in architecture, when they go to Lincoln Park, have them walk up and down Gifford and Bentley between West Side Avenue and JFK Boulervard.
Wonderful huge Victorian wooden houses. Robin.

If they have bikes they can ride up into Weehawken and go to the spot where Alexander Hamilton and Arron Burr has their duel. This would combine their interest in biking and history.

They love art, brunch, hiking, history, rollerblading, biking, night clubs, lounges. My male cousin loves smoking hookah which I guess he can do in NYC. I have lots events planned for us in the evening in New York but I wont be able to host them in the mornings or afternoons due to work. So I figured I create a list with maps attached and they can explore the city until its time to meet me on the other side. Also if you can think of anything that is not very touristy let me know. If you drove or walked somewhere in the city and discovered or saw something really cool and interesting please share. They love sometimes going off the beaten track like me a little kooky.. Thanks again!

Thanks! Do they offer tours for the court houses and City Hall? Every city I visited usually have someone who gives you a tour and a little history of the city.

Thanks everyone, they will be here March 18th through the 27th. I think it should be warmer than it is now, but who knows. You have given me some great ideas, I am putting together a tour guide for them so they can travel in our city when I am at work.

Sacred Heart Cathedral in Newark, NJ is probably the most significant architecture in the United States. It is most certainly more beautiful than St. Patrick's in New York. If it's cherry blossom season they could take a ride through Branch Brook Park in Newark as well. It's shameful for someone to be in New Jersey and not see something as beautiful as the Cathedral. http://www.cathedralbasilica.org/
Also, only open during the week and like 9 to 5 is the mana contemporary art space on Newark Ave. http://www.manafinearts.com/

Bike riding in LSP. I love riding behind the golf course, and
Port Liberte' Sometimes, the park has guided tours that usually meet at the interpretive center. Get on their mailing list. When is the Train Terminal going to reopen? Bayonne, has the 911 monument ALLLLL the way down by the cruise ships. The paving blocks have been taken up for now. A friend from Texas was here and we took photos of him standing around Exchange Pl with the NY skyline behind him. There was a festival going on that day and it was nice. Historic buildings that you can go inside such as the libraries, and City Hall plus a drive by of All the neighborhoods.

4) Pole Position Raceway- bonus at the track. Go during the weekday when no one is there. Don't race against the clock which is boring. Race for a position with your buddy in a dogfight. up and under etc. head down to Zeppelin Hall for some beer after track time(wish Spaten was still on tap). That's what I do when my buds visit from NYC and the burbs. Pershing field has a pool and ice skating, if they are into that kinda of thing.

If you are close to it, have them take the light rail to Newport mall for shopping and/or they could head over to Modells/Target and from there to the beach at Newport Green, which is really nice on a sunny day. If they are on a budget Morton Williams has lunch to take away and enjoy on the waterfront. From there it's a short walk over to Hoboken PATH, or even better, the ferries.
Another budget friendly outing is to take the ferry from Exchange Place to Pier 11 and hop on the Ikea shuttle, though weekdays I think it only runs in the afternoon. The boat ride offers interesting views of Governors Island and Brooklyn, JC in the distance. Foodies should try dosas in Little India, maybe combined with a visit to Mana art http://www.manafinearts.com/about-us/

Not sure if they have any interest in outdoor activities but the variety of birds that pass through in April/May are amazing. I just got into it last spring and every trip with binoculars to the reservoir in the heights and Lincoln Park west yielded many species of colorful warblers/other migratory birds. Also, stripers run up the Hudson at that time.

If they want to see the statue of liberty and ellis island, I believe that getting a ferry from the Jersey side is preferable.. However, if they want to go inside the Statue they need to reserve special tickets like two weeks in advance.
I also suggest taking a walk down to the Colgate clock, or checking out little India. There is also a russian museum somewhere near the big post office.

Yeah, if you want to spend $18 to walk around a 12 acre island with no museum, no pedestal and no crown access. Buying your tickets the day of gets you to the front of the island on the pathway, the restaurant, and gift shop--and that's it. You might as well take the (free) Staten Island Ferry or the (free) walk along the LSP waterfront walkway.

You said they're visiting in a few months, so at least spring. For JC during the day I would also recommend renting bikes either from Grove Bicycle or at LSP itself. THe bike ride along the waterfront (from LSP all the way to Hoboken) is a very nice ride with great views, and during the day is one of the safest/lowest traffic times to ride. I also think lunchtime is the best time to visit the Hoboken waterfront.

If they have never been to the statue of Liberty, it is definitely worth the effort. You really don't need to buy tickets in advance. Just look up the schedule and buy tix the day of. It's really an enjoyable experience and should be on everyone's bucket list, if they have the opportunity to go.

+1 on barcade. They open at noon now and have a great deal at lunch. I believe it's a beer and sandwich for $10. Solid deal.

In a few months I assume they will be here in Spring or beginning of Summer so why not the Statue of Liberty. You can show them its closer to JC than NYC. There is always the Loew's to catch a old movie and just chill. Hoboken as well if they want a night out at the club.
Its reason like this I wish the Embankment would get built and Hyman would just give up. I have had people come here as well and all think the city is nice but is just boring. took them to a a festival downtown but Exchange Pl and they found it to be corny. This city needs to seriously up its entertainment options. There are small towns with more things to do.
