It's true that there is nothing (yet) to prove that Christie knew about this. However, common sense tell us that his aides and political advisors would not be acting so recklessly without his approval or a strong basis to believe he approved based on prior behavior.

Also, his aides were delighted by their little plot. If you had done something you thought was a clever bit of political revenge on your boss's behalf--wouldn't you want your boss to know about it?

My impression was this was a Nixonian performance. Full of lies and betrayal of loyal aides.

There is also the question of the many redactions on the e-mails released. There has been no explanation for them and it is hard to think of any legitimate reason for them. In some cases, the identity of the person sending the e-mail was redacted.

Christie had every reason to believe that the new Speaker would not authorize a continuation of the Assembly's investigation and that the matter would quietly die. Now the investigation can't be squashed and federal prosecutors are involved. The redacted information will be revealed. Can't wait to see what they tried to hide.

In September, according to a report from the Bergen Record, paramedics trying to reach an unconscious 91-year-old woman in Fort Lee, N.J., got stuck in a traffic jam that had apparently been created by Christie's associates as political punishment for the borough's mayor, a Democrat. Multiple lanes were forced to merge into one, gridlocking traffic for days.

The woman later died at a hospital of cardiac arrest, according to a Sept. 10 letter that EMS coordinator Paul Favia sent to the borough's mayor.

"Paramedics were delayed due to heavy traffic on Fort Lee Road and had to meet the ambulance en-route to the hospital instead of on the scene," Favia wrote, the Record reported.

Although Favia did not explicitly blame the woman's death on the traffic delay -- the paramedics got to her in seven minutes -- it was one of four such delays reported by the coordinator, the newspaper reported.

S.E Cupp, a Republican political strategist and CNN "Crossfire" host, said that Christie was "very believable" and "humble and contrite" during his lengthy appearance that she noted would satisfy some people.

"He's not completely out of the woods," Cupp said, noting that there are more questions to be asked.

John King, CNN's chief national correspondent, said it was a defining moment for Christie in terms of his credibility.

"He stood there and took it," King said of the barrage of questions from reporters, noting that his demeanor was uncharacteristically low key. "He understood the gravity of the moment."

CNN Chief Political Analyst Gloria Borger said that Christie did well, expressing humiliation and apologizing. But she said he did not answer why one of his top aides thought apparent retribution was a good thing to do.

"The reasoning behind this still remains an issue," she said.

But situation still could deepen Christie's political woes, David Gergen, a CNN senior political analyst, said on Wednesday.

"If a woman died here," he said of the public safety issue raised in Fort Lee, "he's in deep, deep trouble."

Even if he had nothing to do with the traffic snarls, the allegations could have serious consequences for the two-term governor, analysts said.

"There's something about this that's so petty and so vindictive, and it feeds into this narrative that he's a bully. ... He's going to have to find some way to defuse this to prove he doesn't run a shop like that," said Gergen, a former adviser to several U.S. presidents.

As criticisms of Christie's management style of being heavy handed and petty come to the forefront, Christie said, "I am not a bully." But he added that he is "soul searching" about why he created an environment in which his staff felt they had to lie to him.

Nope, and that's why it's already becoming a non story.

Funny, you've been saying that for weeks, and all the while it's getting to be a bigger and bigger story. If anyone believed this was a isolated incident of a rogue aide, it might not actually have lasting impact. But no one believes that. It's pretty clear that the culture of punitive hardball in Christie's office was well established, and even if he actually didn't personally approve of this one, he set the standard for his staff. Staffers do what they think the boss wants.

The whole article is worth reading to appreciate just how thin-skinned the governor really is. The piece points to example after example of Christie using the power of his office to punish rivals ? even other Republicans ? who?ve offended him in minor and inconsequential ways.
The governor obviously doesn?t want to be blamed for the Fort Lee fiasco, but looking back over the last four years, the available evidence paints a deeply unflattering portrait of an intemperate bully, willing to use the power of his administration to intimidate, punish, and harass.

You know this, Chester? You have the emails or proof? You need to get in touch with the people investigating this. I would assume they'd find your definitive proof very useful in something like this.

Can someone get Chester the contact information for the people in charge of the investigation? Clearly they don't have whatever he has.

If if's and butts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas!

Former Christie Ally, Opponent Always Knew Governor 'Would Implode At Some Point'

By Tom Kludt
Talking Points Memo
Jan 9, 2014

A Republican who's been both
an ally and an opponent to
Chris Christie, Richard Merkt
said he knew the New Jersey
governor's acrimonious
personality would ultimately be
his undoing. He just didn't think
Christie's downfall would come
so soon.

Merkt, who teamed up with
Christie in the 1990s to run for
the state legislature before
taking him on in the 2009
gubernatorial race, told New
York magazine Wednesday that
he sees shades of Nixon in the
George Washington Bridge
scandal.

"You know, reading the reports
about the GW bridge fiasco, I
recalled how similar the
governor's conduct during the
re-election campaign was to
that of President Nixon during
his victorious re-election
campaign in 1972," Merkt said
in an email.

-snip-

That's vintage Christie,
according to Merkt, who noted
that the spiteful move came at a
time when the governor was
cruising to a massive victory
over Democrat Barbara Buono.
"Given his vindictive nature, I
always sensed that Christie
would implode at some point,
but I did not foresee it
happening so soon or over such
a petty matter," Merkt said. "By
the way, my recollection is that
Nixon crushed McGovern by a
60 percent to 38 percent
margin, a margin virtually
identical to Christie's victory
over Buono. Funny how history
repeats itself."

U.S. Attorney to Open Inquiry Into
Bridge Scandal

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/10/nyr ... e-lane-closings.html?_r=0

Federal prosecutors in New Jersey will begin a
preliminary inquiry into the lane closures in Fort
Lee, according to a law enforcement source.

A source with knowledge of the plans said that
the United States attorney for New Jersey, Paul J.
Fishman, would announce the investigation on
Thursday morning.

The decision to open an inquiry came after the
matter was referred to the office by the inspector
general for the Port Authority of New York and
New Jersey, which controls the bridge, the
source said.

Christie claims that he didn't know about this, but I don't buy that. If I were to do some ethically questionable things for the company I work for, I would do it IF my boss tells me to do so. Or if these kinds of things are done on a regular basis, I may feel okay to take initiative and do it without his specific instruction (because it has been done many times before and because I have been rewarded by doing so in the past).

So IF Christie didn't tell his staff to do it in this instance, which is possible, he must have instructed his staff to do similar things routinely (and that's why his staff did it without informing their boss this time).

I'm not sure if evidence of his instruction to his staff can and will be found, but now that this is out, every little incident in which Christie has abused his power in the past will be scrutinized (I hope!).

Looking ahead, several state officials have raised the prospect of a criminal investigation, and as state Assemblyman John Wisniewski (D) said on the show last night, there?s an expectation that the matter would be directed to a federal prosecutor because New Jersey prosecutors are appointed by the governor.

I never thought that Christie would survive GOP primaries, but I now don't think he is going to get to be a candidate.

Of course, I could be wrong, but this is NOT going away anytime soon.

Political Insider: Dems working hard to widen that chink in Christie's armor
Agustin C. Torres/The Jersey Journal By Agustin C. Torres/The Jersey Journal

on January 09, 2014 at 6:01 AM, updated January 09, 2014 at 6:18 AM

The past 72 hours have exploded with political hot news in the state and to some extent Jersey City. With national significance, the media blitz gives the Democratic Party about 90 percent on the joy meter.
Democrats feel they have found a big chink in Republican Gov. Chris Christie?s armor. And for those who are just starting to thaw, the following is what you missed.
So-called private (and heavily redacted for the media) emails between a Christie deputy chief of staff and a political appointee at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey reveal (surprise) that the governor?s gang knew of a plot to close several lanes at the George Washington Bridge in September to flood Fort Lee streets with traffic. It is ostensibly revenge against Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich ? who was referred to as ?idiot? in one email ? for failing to endorse Christie?s re-election.
Christie came out with a statement in which he threw his not-for-long deputy chief of staff, Bridget Anne Kelly, under the usual bus. The governor said he was misled which is hard to believe that anyone could mislead him -- except perhaps when state Education Commissioner Bret Schundler "misled" him over a presentation in Washington, D.C. that led to Schundler's firing.
Now I expect the Dems to out-Christie the governor.
Former Assemblyman Louis Manzo, who was indicted in the Operation Bid Rig III FBI sting and saw all charges dismissed by a federal judge, wrote a book that is expected to hit the shelves in the near future. TYhe draft I saw has more about Christie than about Manzo's own ordeal and it has an eye-opening long history of Christie?s prosecutions that paint the governor as an opportunist ? and yes, a bully.
Manzo?s book is tentatively called ?Big Boy, Christie?s Appetite for Power.? The term ?Big Boy? was Karl Rove?s nickname for Christie. In the book, the future governor was being asked by the media ? after media leaks announced an investigation of U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, who was preparing for the 2006 general election ? about possible partisanship. Christie responded: ?I just stand by my record. I don?t worry about that. I don?t get involved in politics, the silly season ? that?s for politicians, not for prosecutors.?
With Christie seen as a threat to any Democratic nominee for president of the USA, he should expect the ?Christie? treatment and the GWB lane closures appear to be the best vehicle available to make his life miserable.
One scenario presented to me is that because the P.A. is a bi-state agency, we could see Preet Bharara, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and a close pal of U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-New York, asked to throw everything against the wall to make something stick against Christie?s staff member and hopefully the governor. Christie should understand that even if nothing comes of any possible investigation, as those who are never convicted after an indictment can attest, the damage is already done once there are headlines.
Understand that we?re only talking scenarios and no one is being accused of anything like interfering with interstate commerce or other possible federal charges.
Let?s be honest here. Christie doesn?t have the official power to make anyone in the Port Authority do anything. The betting here is that the real problem is the PANYNJ charter, which probably does a bad job of saying who?s in charge.
We?ll be learning much about these issues for months to come. In the meantime, don?t be shocked if some officials turn up the heat by using the word ?impeach? and others calling Christie?s run for president over ? something that would make Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop and New Jersey Senate President Stephen Sweeney cry.
Here in Jersey City, we got excited because Fulop was mentioned when the Port Authority hack wrote that Sokolich?s phone calls are ignored by the P.A. and that is second on the ?radio silence? list behind the Jersey City mayor. It means that Fulop, who has threatened to sue the bi-state agency over under taxed property it owns in Jersey City, is number one on the enemies list. By association, it is presumed that Christie has Fulop, who never endorsed Christie, high on his get-even list.
Yesterday, my sources tell me that Fulop was swamped by nationwide media calls from, from Diane Sawyer to, all right, me. The mayor has been so tight-lipped that he failed to even tweet once and he has tweeted at least once every day for as long as I can recall.

Press conference at 11AM this morning. Watch Christie's response morph from sarcasm to indignation.

It's a traffic jam. We get those in NJ. Please.

Traffic jams cause problems such as this:

Now, would the 91-year old woman have died if they had responded sooner? Possibly. But the point is we'll never know.

But suppose this woman was your mother. Or suppose you were injured in that crash and were waiting for medical help. Or suppose your spouse was the one experiencing chest pains and waiting on an ambulance.

It isn't just a traffic jam or petty politics anymore, is it?

Remind me, did they cover the story when another cheap politician tried to block the roadside near the Mount Rushmore to stick it to the people?

Wow! Look at that traffic!

I don't like Fox but if you go on their website it's right on the front page...

http://www.northjersey.com/fortlee/GW ... _mayor.html?mobile=1&ic=1

-snip-

Sokolich was outraged at what
now appears to be a vindictive
action directed at him. Many
have speculated that Sokolich, a
Democrat, was being punished
for not endorsing the
Republican governor who was
sailing to a landslide victory
against state Sen. Barbara
Buono. Initially, the mayor was
reticent to accuse the
administration of orchestrating
the plot but emails and text
messages between Christie
loyalists that emerged
Wednesday suggested there
was a calculated plot to cause
mayhem in Fort Lee. One email
exchange referred to Sokolich
as ?the little Serbian? and ?an
idiot.? Another called the
children stranded in buses, ?the
children of Buono voters.?

"Is it wrong that I?m smiling,? an
unidentified person wrote after
the mayor texted a Port
Authority of New York and New
Jersey official asking for help.

?How dare you schedule a man-made traffic disaster in my
community?? Sokolich said. ?It?s
the example of the pettiest and
most venomous side of
politics.?

?I?m embarrassed for the people
that participated in this,? he
added. ?I didn?t know whether
my reaction should be comical
or criminal,? he said about first
hearing the news.

The people of Fort Lee deserve
an apology, he said. ?I want
someone from Trenton to come
and hold a town hall meeting
and explain to us precisely how
it happened, why it happened
and try to convince us that it will
never, ever happen again."

As for the email calling Sokolich
a Serbian, he notes that he is
Croatian.

?I have Serbian friends who I
have to believe were insulted
because it was said in a
condescending way,? he said.

It's going to be interesting if the Feds investigate and question Christie. He, more than most, knows the penalty for lying to the Feds.

Fort Lee Mayor says he
fears further retribution in
wake of GWB lane closure

By David Giambusso
The Star-Ledger
January 08, 2014

Fort Lee Mayor Mark
Sokolich said this evening
he believes the George
Washington Bridge lane
closures that snarled
traffic for hours in his
Bergen County borough
warranted a criminal
investigation and fears
further retribution when
media attention to the
scandal dies down.

"You cannot close down
the biggest bridge in the
world for political
retribution," Sokolich said
in an interview with
CNN's Wolf Blitzer.

Sokolich, a Democrat, was
the apparent target of the
September lane closures
after he refused to
endorse Christie's 2013
re-election bid, according
to emails obtained today
by The Star-Ledger.

"This is about the lowest
level of poltical venom I
could ever make up," said
a visibly agitated
Sokolich.

Asked if he thought the
lane closures warranted a
criminal probe, he said,
"I've got to believe there's
going to be an
investigation to
determine if this rises to
the level of criminality."

But Sokolich said his
biggest concern is what
happens when the
scandal retreats from the
headlines.

"I'm nervous about future
retribution," Sokolich
said. "I want Fort Lee left
alone."
