So you are ranting about a 4-5 minute difference ??

I take it you don't commute...

Well I do, and I'm joining the rant! 4-5 minutes each way adds up to nearly an hour each week. And, for those of us who are too far to walk to the PATH, that 4 -5 minutes results in missed connections - that in addition to delays in the bus service. Pretty soon - as is the case nearly every day for me - you are looking at a 10 to 15 minute difference each way.

For what it's worth, whatever signal system the MTA uses allows them to run trains MUCH closer together than the PATH ever has, as far as I know. Just about every morning, I catch the A or C at Chambers, and very often if you just missed the closing doors and the train is pulling out of the station, you can look down the track and see the next train approaching.

The one time I actually saw "signal problems" occur where I bought that excuse was on the Newark train. They were not getting signal from another train that needed to pass before they could continue full speed ahead. The train I was on would move a short distance slowly, then suddenly stop, then move again, than stop. I guess they were coordinating with the other train via radio or something. Other times, they will hold the train between stations and announce "we are waiting for a signal from other trains."

Yes this morning sucked [badly] but really its generally pretty reliable during rush hour. Weekends and late nights are a different story but that is the same with any major subway system.

The MTA has improved reliability a lot in the last 5-10 years. Sadly, Path has lagged behind, mainly because of its signal system that dates back to the 60s. And the much needed upgrades were pushed back even further due to Sandy, so my guess is this will only get worse in the near future.

Here?s an article on the original upgrade plans, SIX years ago:

the MTA has how many lines? how many subway stops? the PATH has 4 lines (2 on weekend) and like a dozen stops. it's simply not a fair comparison.

A Port Authority employee working in the car/equipment division of PATH said he doesn't give much credence to the Port Authority's excuse that the delays resulted from a signal failure.

Ancient infrastructure, and Sandy f'd it up even more. The signal system is I believe in the process of being updated, but who knows how long that's going to take (they are saying 2018 but will probably be longer), and who knows how much good it's actually going to do.

The Path has gotten very frustrating. It used to be really reliable.

...and regarding the signal problems, their site is now saying the replacement project will be completed in 2015. I feel like it used to have an earlier date - possibly even next year... I guess it was delayed by Sandy? (which seems ridiculous, if so - why they wouldn't have taken full-system outages as an opportunity to ramp up the replacement project is beyond me...)

NJT was cross-honoring this morning. Of course that's really vague and there are never any details as to what exactly that MEANS, but I'd hope it would mean you could take the lightrail and not have to worry about a summons, on your way to Hoboken...

It seems like the "new" reader boards have been installed for over a year but they have never provided any information. One wonders why they cant get those into service and provide useful information over them.

As for the audio announcements it sounds like someone is standing on the side of the Turnpike in a windstorm using their cellphone to make the recording.

PATH, please try harder. The money has been spent, lets use the investment.

Sorry that happened to you. What a mess. The lack of accountability is appalling.

It will be interesting to if an incident like this happens on Superbowl Sunday. Quite frankly a part of me wishes that it does to highlight the extreme communication & service problems that exist on the PATH.

At 11:00 I departed a train from Trenton and made my way to the PATH platform to get on the PATH train scheduled to leave at 11:20. Usually there is a train waiting there and sometimes they open the doors early so people can stay warm till they depart. Other times they let folks freeze and open the train at 11:19. Tonight no train waiting. No train at 11:20. No announcements. I can see the warm PATH employee behind a microphone but she won't acknowledge anyone.

11:30.... no train and no announcement. Nothing posted on the tv scroll either.

11:45....no train and no announcement. Damn its cold. Consider going into warm area and re-paying for my ride if I have to give up another 2.50.

11:55....still no announcement but wait here comes a train! Hooray. Train pulls up and hundreds stand at the doors waiting to get out of frigid temperatures.

12:00....doors still not open

12:05....doors not open. Lights in train go dark and still no announcements.

12:10....1st announcement made that there will be a 30 minute delay

12:11....announcements made that service suspended indefinitely.

Don't expect these folks to recklessly run a train if they don't competently think they can do it. But at any point they could have informed people what was going on and what choices may have existed. A bus downstairs was running to Journal Square. NJTransit trains were slowed but were getting to 33rd Street. Of course the taxis were a resource also. Myself and a NJ State Trooper (God bless her) were standing in a crowd telling people where to go and what to do.

PATH communication = Epic Fail

My personal commute ended when I got home at 2:30 am...three hours late with questions to answer at home.... lol
