Yeah I love this place but delivery is tough. I guess they are too busy and have lots of orders. The taste gap is the largest at this restaurant I think (delivery vs dine in).

When you eat a sandwich/burger in the restaurant, it is a world apart from the soggy mess you receive. The fries in a paper bag is fine, IF it's vented and delivered quickly. However, having the sandwiches wrapped up like a cold hero makes no sense. It should be placed in a paper or foam box with vent slits.

btw, their scallop tacos are nuts.

I used to love the delivery, but it is so hot/cold I think I'm done with it. Noting that I have been a big fan of the sandwiches and wings from the start, 2 of my last 3 experiences have been pretty frustrating.

1) Order took over 2 hours to deliver. I ordered Meatloaf sandwich from the lunch menu, and received a Meatloaf entree from the dinner menu. Not only is this not on the menu for the time I called in the order, but it is $10 more than the sandwich I ordered... and comes with mash, which would be fine if IO did not order fries as well. The fries: were a wet greasy ball of mush. the entree was room temp and congealed. Pretty clear this had been sitting around for most of the 2 hours since I ordered. And I did not get 2 sodas paid for.

2) Not as big a deal, but the sodas are warm and the fries were half or less of the bag that is normally full, or close to it. The Chix parm used to be a nice size on portugues type roll. New thin long roll cuts the size by 1/3rd, and the amount of chix at least in half. The chix was strangely rubbery. Appearance suggested maybe frozen (where they used to be "fresh"?). And the final joke, almost no sauce. Like a hint of red.

Anyway, wish these guys nothing but the best, but the staff attitude that results in the experiences above is troubling. If this is "good enough" for them, I think that says a lot.

Any time I have eaten at either of Park and Sixth's location (old Grove spot and the "gastropub"), the table service has been pretty poor. Mostly because it was obvious that the servers were not professional servers, just people who wanted a job.

This was "fine" at the spot on Grove, which was a small quirky kind of cool space ... but when I visited the gastropub, which has more premium prices, that's not very acceptable in my opinion. I also thought the fake brick and overall (kind of cheesy?) decor at the Gastropub was also not appropriate considering the menu prices.

Went there tonight, around 7. Was surprised to get a table right away. Food was good, however, it seemed the service was completely overwhelmed. It took them about 40 - 45 minutes to get the appetizers (party of 2). It took a total of about an hour and a half to get the one entree that we ordered.

During the 40 minutes or so that we were waiting the entree to be brought out, we had empty beer glasses on our table for a good 20 - 25 minutes without even a glimpse from any of the waitresses as we were trying to get their attention.

It wasn't just our table either, they were extremely slow for all of the tables in the back room.

Hopefully its just growing pains and they will get it together.

Jersey City restaurant looks to serve up something delicious with new, bigger space

Jersey City chef and restaurateur Brian Dowling has come a long way since serving cold cut sandwiches and fresh mozzarella on the corner of Park Avenue and Sixth Street in Hoboken.

Dowling, who based the name of his restaurant on where he got his start in 2009, later moved to Jersey City and opened a "Gastropub" version of his franchise just last year.

This week, he will officially move his Grove Street restaurant a few blocks south to 279 Grove, where he will expand the menu and fully take advantage of a space twice the size of his previous location.

"We've become quite popular, but I've found myself having to turn people away on busy nights because of seating capacity. The new restaurant is going to be somewhere between 90 to 100 seats, the other was only 40," said Dowling.

Dowling's newest restaurant will take the place of American-style food eatery The Merchant, which closed its doors in early November.

Had the burger at the Park and Sixth Gastropub and share a lot sentiments here. Really good burger. Very high quality beef, which was tender and perfectly seasoned. A little bit on the greasy side, but that's not necessarily a bad thing for a burger. The brie was interesting, but I'd probably just opt for the classic American cheese next time-- brie is just a little too rich and creamy for a burger for my taste. Agree with Abe_Froman about the bun. With a burger this melt-in-your-mouth tender, you need a softer bun. Biting into the burger or cutting it in half leads to it sort of falling apart or sliding off the bun. Overall, a really top notch burger.

I also totally agree with sillyscorp-- "tater tots" is a misnomer. They are potato croquettes. I was sort of expecting Sonic-style crispy tots smothered or stuffed with goat cheese and the other listed toppings. Instead we got potato croquettes, which were decent enough, but not what we ordered or wanted.

Beer selection was also pretty good.

Overall, I think the place nails it on food and atmosphere. I'll definitely be back. I have a feeling it's going to do well.

Had a little birthday dinner with some girl friends at the new gastropub the other day - really great atmosphere and delicious food and drinks. Honestly everything tasted absolutely delicious and I really liked the portion size. The small plates are "small" but the perfect size to try something but not have a giant full plate of a 1000 calorie meal - the perfect little splurge that leaves you satisfied but not sluggish instead of a man why did I eat pants unbuttoned on the ride home. (but maybe thats just me an my own personal lack of self control)

We tried a few drinks - ruby, jack sparrow and woodford martini (really nice pour on the martini - enough for 2 glasses! not sure if that was a mistake or what but no complaints) and I found them nicely balanced - not sickly sweet (which could be an issue especially for the ruby) nor alcoholic fumes that knock you out in one sip

my one "complaint" would that the tater tots are more like croquettes (and totally delicious) but I was picturing more like a cheesy fries type thing and it definitely wasn't - we ordered them as something to share while waiting on the rest of the girls to show up and it was like 6 individual "tots"

also menu is not the same as what is listed online. There is an additional salad section that had an AMAZING lobster cobb - one of the best lobster dishes I have had in the area. Perfectly cooked lobster meat not stringy or rubbery just really nice with some thick cut pancette or bacon type "bits"

I am REALLY hoping that the grove street location will go back to the sandwich menu all day though.... don't get my wrong the small plate idea is great but sometimes you just want one of those fat juicy subs (and go back to take out at night too please!)

Burger is damn good. Don't love going or $10-$12 for a bar burger, but will be back for this one.

That said, the bun does not work. too hard, the burger is all over the place when you bite.

Today is the first day they are open! I randomly ran into the owner outside the restaurant and he let me take a look around and showed me the menu. Really beautiful space and the menu is really tasty looking - high-end comfort food is how he described it. Located directly across from the post office off of montgomery street.

Agreed. I didn't have any interest in going to Harbor Casino until I heard it had been renamed White Star. I checked it out, enjoyed it, and have been there a few times since.

I think it'd be a good idea for Brian Dowling to give his new place on York Street a different name, for marketing purposes. Why name a place that's half a mile away the same exact thing? The place deserves it's own identity! Not to mention that it's confusing for customers. I feel the same way about White Star renaming Harbor Casino, White Star. Unless you're trying to start a chain restaurant, I don't understand naming bars/eateries the same thing, so close to one another geographically.

A Review of Park and Sixth Restaurant, in Jersey City

Had I known that Tuesday was all-you-can-eat mussels night at Park and Sixth, I never would have dined there then. I like mussels but not enough to visit on an evening when mussels, along with items from the lunch menu, are served in place of the larger dinner menu.

What good luck that I did. No matter how you feel about mussels, those soaking in a creamy, fiery Thai brew of red curry paste, lemon grass, Kaffir lime leaves and coconut milk, were among the more interesting mussels I?ve sampled. (The other choice, also good, was a white-wine and saffron sauce.) An endless supply, served with crusty bread from Antique Bakery in Hoboken, was only $10.

After our first bowl of mussels, my companion said, ?I could eat these all night.? And if you choose not to eat only mussels, even on Tuesday the menu offers enough other items to satisfy a hungry diner; among them, burgers, fries and sandwiches, many of them first-rate.

Whatever you order, Park and Sixth, a three-year-old neighborhood restaurant and bar, is the kind of place where you want to linger. Quintessentially hipster, it revels in retro artifacts such as the old album covers that decorate one of several chaotically colorful walls and the Mason jars used as water glasses. Other reasons to prolong your visit include the crowd, which, like this downtown section of Jersey City, includes a smattering of everyone (including, in this case, men in suits, toddlers and a middle-aged woman sipping a martini by herself); great music (Ray Charles, the Band, Nirvana); and affable servers who are not afraid to point you to the best selections on the menu.

On that Tuesday, their choices included an excellent sandwich aptly named the garden. Many meatless sandwiches won?t suffice for dinner; the garden is an exception, crowded with mostly roasted vegetables (among them, zucchini, peppers and portobello mushrooms) and broccoli rabe that the kitchen takes the time to first blanch and then saut? in olive oil, garlic and red pepper flakes. You can add house-made mozzarella (the alternative is a rubbery smoked Gruy?re), which works beautifully with the feisty vegetables.

Before he opened Park and Sixth, Brian Dowling, 41, owned a delicatessen on Park Avenue and Sixth Street in Hoboken, hence the name of this larger, expanded operation. ?I had never made mozzarella cheese before, but working in Hoboken, land of mozzarella cheese, I thought I should give it a try,? Mr. Dowling said on the telephone after my visits. Next month, he plans to open a second restaurant, Park and Sixth Gastropub, in the Paulus Hook neighborhood of Jersey City, with a more traditional menu format.

In the bar-food realm, Park and Sixth serves a satisfying hamburger called the powerhouse. Consisting mostly of ground short rib with a little brisket and chuck, it is rich but not too fatty. Generous amounts of ginger electrify the ground-tuna burger, which, like all the burgers, is available at both lunch and dinner, and comes with a choice of a mesclun salad (with a too-vinegary vinaigrette) or fries.

Both the Old Bay and sweet potato fries are wondrously crisp. My favorites, however, were the parmigiana fries, dressed up with parsley and truffle oil, which you must order ? la carte. Considering that nothing on either the lunch or dinner menu costs more than $15, they are definitely worth the additional $6.

At dinner, the tuna tartare tacos are a standout among the ?small plates,? none of which are that small. Filled with a blend of ground tuna, tomatillo salsa and a creamy, sriracha-infused mayonnaise, they arrive beneath a lively pico de gallo sauce. Mr. Dowling never attended culinary school, but in dishes like this one, his talent and the knowledge he has picked up along the way shine.

On occasion, the menu misfires. Among its less successful dishes are a soggy brussels sprouts hash and a so-called Garbage Salad, in which the mix of cooked and raw vegetables is overdressed and, despite the lime and cilantro vinaigrette, dull. Norris Johnson?s macaroni and cheese, named for an acquaintance of the owner?s father, lacks the lovely creaminess of better versions; the carrot and ginger pur?e served beneath three lackluster pan-seared scallops is also bland. My final complaint: At a time when even the bins of my local ShopRite were overflowing with gorgeous, ripe, Jersey beefsteaks, a plate of the fine, milky house mozzarella cheese arrived with tasteless plum tomatoes. Especially at the height of the season, there is no excuse.

Except on Friday and Saturday nights, when flan is prepared by a Mexican woman who worked with Mr. Dowling in Hoboken, the restaurant doesn?t serve dessert. No matter; as we picked our way through the remaining parmigiana fries, my companion and I agreed: Park and Sixth is not a place you are in any rush to leave.

Still have not hit the small plates, but I do love the "new" sandwich lineup. Updated meatloaf and short rib are awesome as is the Chix Parm (a bit inconsistent, but whatevs). RIP roast beef though, will be missed.

Wings are also my go-to in town these days. Different, but I do dig it.

Anyways, keep it up! Has been fun watching your food evolve.

I believe that they have stopped serving sandwiches most (if not all) nights. I have only ever tried the small plates, which I really enjoy. If you do check out their menu at night, I suggest the meatloaf.

I have been a big fan of Park & Sixth, specifically of their sandwiches and the "kind of a bar but not really a bar" atmosphere.

I recently heard that they changed their menu, and that they no longer offer their delicious sandwiches after lunch time. Does anybody know if this is true?

Hey guys,

The reason we stop delivering Friday and Saturday nights at 5:00 is simply because my kitchen cannot handle it. Think about it this way. We make everything, I mean everything that goes on the sandwiches from scratch. So on Friday and Saturday we are essentially prepping and cooking two different menus at once. If I were to include delivery we wouldn't be able to handle it. I hope that answers the question.

But starting next week we will be delivering on Sundays.

had not really picked up on "no delivery sunday" before. so i just had my P&S craving negged. so my money goes to another establishment? Not sure I understand what the point is, unless they simply can not support the stress level in the kitchen two weekend days in a row... and prefer to make less money on the weekend. which is weird. As a small business you have three days to really kill it, all out: Friday/Sat/Sunday. would be interested to see why you would choose to bail on 'x' percentage of potential profit during that period.

Anyway, still love the place.

We stopped in last night around 9pm and the place was busy!! We were surprised by the small plates menu which is a Friday & Saturday night special. The burgers were still available but the rest of the sandwiches were not. The small plates sounded and looked good but we had gone in specifically for the sandwich that I liked. Brian came by and I asked him about it and he gladly made the sandwich for me - thank you! I would definitely stop in for a fried chicken night too!

Speaking of deliver, it'd be real nice if you had better delivery hours. No delivery on Sunday or after 5 on weekdays is kinda poor. I know my roommate has tried to order twice from you now and both times, spent hie money elsewhere because you weren't delivering at that time.
