Yep, I saw those passing by it once through the park. :) I was thinking it was for the Path vs the Holland Tunnel once I saw those.

Newport is definitely super-safe. We could see the green from our apartment at all hours of the night, and there was always security there. You could go and sit on the green at 3am without a worry. :)

We've actually moved, so if anyone is looking for a great 17th floor 1020sq ft 1br+den, get in touch with me, 615-512-5520.

Your kid probably breathes in more pollution just by living in the city. The extra .000000001 percent of pollution the vent supposedly makes will not matter in the least bit.

I hope you're more concerned about safety which if you are, Newport is ideal (if you are adamant on living in JC).

The prevailing wind comes in from the harbor and sends the air north toward Hoboken. Hoboken residents receive more of the exhaust fumes than we do.

This is the vent shaft for the Holland Tunnel:

This is the vent shaft for the PATH train tunnel:

I don't think there are any real risks from being around the PATH vent. Like someone else said, it's mostly hot air. You would be exposed to worse actually riding the train or hanging out in a station (steel and brake dust), though even that isn't that bad. I'd be more concerned about just living in Jersey City in general, especially since we're downwind of the coal fired power plant on the Hackensack River.

It wouldn't be any worse than the air breathed in by children when they ride the trains.

oh, my bad. forgive the snark. I didn't realize there was one in the park.

well, I wouldn't sweat it. I don't think there's too much gross stuff emanating from the trains. just heat, mostly.

And isn't it quite a way from the shore line?

Do you think our kids are breathing in any of that when they play in the park or is it too high to affect them?

My wife and I have been asking ourselves this for the last month now. We see what looks like it's leveled twin in the Hudson during low tide, but we can't figure out what each of these are/were used for.

At first I was thinking the Holland Tunnel, but that's further south, and there are two HUGE structures that are across from each other on the Hudson.

Any insight appreciated.
