For those curious about JC street art here's some links. There is, of course, the well-known Columbus Dr. mural, which has been damaged and it looking a bit faded. But it's well documented, e.g. HERE, and HERE ? this is one of a bunch of photos on Flickr, move back and forth to see the others. This discussion over at Wired JC concerns recent work (back to 2009), w/ photos. Here's a link to a PDF of a little pamphlet I put together a couple of years ago: Urban Marginalia: Graffiti in Jersey City. It's three long blog articles I'd posted to the now defunct cultural site, The Valve. I just printed them to PDF and stitched them together. So the formatting's a bit funky, but its got lots of photos and contextual information, including a satellite views of the area covered in the essay.

Of course, street art & graffiti have been here for a long time. For example, if you go down Pacific all the way to the end, go right (west) on Carteret and then stop at the first alleyway on the left. You?ll see it?s filled with graffiti, all by permission. The alley was originally curated by Green Villain. If you walk down the alley, way down on the left you?ll see this: IMGP3073 It?s a slightly older mural by the same artists who did the city-sponsored mural at Grant and Summit: IMGP3828 I don?t know how much of the newer stuff is city-sponsored and how much is simply at the initiative of the artists themselves and the property owners. The city has plans for more murals, though I don?t know what they are. But there?s a problem. As far as I know, the city-sponsored murals have been commissioned out of the Mayor?s office and involve coordination between property owners and artists. But as far as I know there?s been relatively little community input on these murals. They city has simply made a judgment about what?s appropriate for a given building and put the mural in place. That?s not how the very well-known mural arts program in Philadelphia is run. In that program the artists consult with neighborhood residents on design. In some cases they?ve even taken a paint-by-numbers approach where the artist will paint an outline for at least part of the mural and then neighborhood residents will fill it in. Thus these mural projects are conceived of and run as community-building projects. The Fulop administration hasn?t adopted that approach, though it may do so in the future. Right now they?re going to quick impact and are running things from the top-down. That?s short-sighted.

Wow these are great. I've seen a few in person, but curious to know where the unlisted ones are located. Any one feel like taking a stab at listing the locations?
