As soon as Rainbow goes belly up, I could see a Trader Joes in that space. It's huge!

Yup, about 3 blocks north of WTC, on 14th, 2 blocks east of the path stop and on 24th and 7th. (all are inferior to trader joe's. F WF GO TJ!)

I am so going to be going to the Newark location. I'm sick of making the public transit trek to the Columbus Circle Whole Foods. Supposedly the Newark location prices will be cheaper.
Two year wait though.

This is like the nudniks that want more bars. There's everything you could want now in DTJC but people can't be satisfied.

The company has looked at neighboring cities to Newark, such as Hoboken and Jersey City, but hasn't find the right location yet for a Whole Foods, Mr. Sinatra said. Hope...

I always said Jersey City would NEVER get a Whole Foods, and I'm fine with that. In fact, I'm relieved. I would rather get a Wegman's anyway. Whole Paycheck is priced at a premium, and I think it's way overpriced for what they have to offer.

I must have missed the 2.8M condo sold in Newark.
I must have missed the NYT and other publications giving Newark restaurants reviews like the ones for Satis and 30 Acres. I must have missed Newark having nearly all the tallest buildings in the state. I must have missed all the variety of newer establishments in Newark, from Michael Kors to Barcade to the Beer Garden to Pole Position. I must have missed how Newark has a miles long riverfront promendade that can be used to walk to neighboring cities. Should I go on? Should I cite the crime? Because if you try to throw in Greenville it won't be pretty for Newark. Comparing Jersey City and Newark is like comparing Chicago and Detroit. Both have their issues, but one has a hugely vibrant and prosperous core and the other does not. The "Newark isn't that bad" types are just concerned with the ascendance of Jersey City as the state's biggest and most important city. Newark has an airport, pastel de nata, and now Whole Foods, and then a wasteland. Doesn't even come close to what we have.

If WF really opens in Newark - in other words, if this isn't pre-election hype - I'm sure they're getting a sweetheart lease that will keep their operating costs at rock-bottom. They'll be buying great PR and a buddy in the US Senate. Not a bad deal for them. And totally agree with previous posters - Newark has a loooooooong way to go before it can be called "gentrifying".

First off, there is a Whole Foods in West Orange...are we supposed to believe that surrounding towns like the other Oranges together are more affluent than DTJC, Hoboken, Society Hill & Port Liberte, and most of Weehawken, which would give your typical NJ suburb a run for its money in terms of affluence.
Hoboken ranks very high in NJ in terms of average income. I'm sure DTJC isn't far behind. Second of all, Newark is a hole. Sorry, it is. It has good Portuguese food and that is the beginning and end. Most RU-N and NJIT students don't live there. At the Red Hot Chili Peppers concert at the Rock a year or two ago, a bunch of thugs attacked people exiting the arena including a boy and his father. So yeah can't see a rock concert safely but I'd walk down the street there with a Whole Foods bag? Really? I rarely concur with the average NJ.Com comment but they are not horribly off the mark. There is surface parking- not much- but there is- in DTJC. The Pathmark lot or the area north of the tunnel (which would be walking distance for much of Hoboken and perfect with all the tunnel traffic) would be ideal. Target, Modells, A&P, all have surface parking. I also concur with the sentiment that is mostly anti-chain here except when it suits people. Tear down the mall, but bring in WF! My consumerism over your consumerism! And finally, TJ is superior by a lot. It's the same thing, but not a rip off, and less hipster and stroller mom types.

FWIW, I would much rather have a decent independent market than a WF.
And yes, the Tribeca WF is much, much closer than a WF in newark would be.

I think people want something like a WFs. If a local, or smaller, retailer would open up something that covers their needs the community would love that as well. Still, you have a point.

They want a giant surface parking lot and JC is not putting in a giant surface parking lot for them. I'd rather have a TJ's or any number of other places.
There is a rumor that TJ's is coming to one of the new (under construction) buildings, but I have no idea if that has legs.
