A man is in critical condition after being struck by a taxi late Tuesday night, an hour after another pedestrian was injured in a hit-and-run in the same area of Jersey City, police said. The man, who police say did not have identification with him, was struck at 10:55 p.m. at Baldwin Avenue and the elevated portion of Route 139, also known as State Highway. He is being treated for head trauma and other injuries at the Jersey City Medical Center, officials said. Police said his injuries are life-threatening. The driver of a New York City taxi told police he was traveling west on Route 139, a 4-lane road, when the man darted in front of his vehicle at Baldwin Avenue, police said. The driver, who told police he had the green light, said the unidentified man had been standing on the center island before trying to dash across the street, reports said. In the earlier incident, at 9:55 p.m., a bicyclist traveling north on Oakland Avenue was struck by a burgundy BMW SUV going west on the elevated portion of Route 139, reports said. The victim, a Jersey City man, said the SUV continued west and never stopped, police said. The victim was taken to the Jersey City Medical Center and treated for back pain, reports state. Anyone with information on either accident is asked to call Jersey City police at (201) 547-JAIL.
