Just to bring some closure to "The Case of the Mysterious Metal Spikey Things", Someonesane is the big winner. I passed a sign for The Maddox today and that's exactly what I found, minus the actual sign part. I took a photo, but I can't figure out how to post it. Anyway, they're dangerous, but thankfulky not malicious.

Understood and I appreciate your post. People should know that if they remove the signs they should remove the entire sign and not just the graphic. The stakes are very dangerous.
Also I chose the tag "someonesane" in response to the replies not the OP.

Well, maybe you're right. One of them did have the stakes bent down. I assumed some other safety-conscious person had done it. Finding these, coupled with the fact that someone had described something exactly like this and warned me to watch out for the dog, it seemed like too much of a coincidence. I hope you're right!

I saw the one at 6th and Jersey (North side of the street next to the embankment cable tied to a galvanized metal signpost) it was a step stake sign holder. I removed one EXACTLY like it with the sign attached a few months ago and it was quickly replaced-then someone just remove the sign & bent the spikes down.
I'm a dog owner too and I'm concerned about their safety. I just don't think this is a malicious act as you're making it out to be.

No, that's not what these were. I'm familiar with what you're talking about. I walk around downtown JC all day long, it's my job, so I've seen the empty sign stands you're referring to. While I can see how these sound similar from my description, the things I found were obviously home-welded. Where the prongs were attatched was very crude and lumpy and they had been painted black. I suppose anything is possible but I consider myself to be pretty sane as well, and I'm pretty sure that these things had been put there as deterrents for dogs.

While they might be dangerous these are not booby-traps.
They are stands for real estate marketing signs.
The co-extruded vinyl sign tops with the sales info have been removed.
Most likely by some nice neighbor who doesn't want
real estate agents advertising that way.
They probably didn't realize the danger posed by
the pointed sign holder when the top was removed.

No excuse for these 'booby traps' but what triggered someone to do this - cause and effect to mitigate it from happening again?
Is the location a high poop and pee area where some fail to pick-up? - It doesn't take much to trigger dog-rage.

For what it's worth, the one that was at the base of a tree was not in plain sight. It had been intentionally hidden amongst some high grass. It was not a tree that had nice plantings at the base or anything either, just a bunch of crab grass and weeds.
Also worth noting: I looked for more devices, as did someone from the city and we didn't find any more.

I have two dogs one of which is 16 years old and is deaf and almost blind. I also have a 2 1/2 year old toddler who loves walking my dogs with me. Thank you for alerting these traps, it can easily hurt my nearly blind senior dog and my daughter.

How am I being dramatic? I didn't say a dog WOULD impale themselves, I said I suspect that was the intent of whomever placed them there.
Also, I'm glad that your dog is healthy, observant, and intelligent enough to avoid these. And you're right, most dogs could probably avoid them just fine. But there are many senior dogs and dogs born with vision impairment who may not detect them in time. Also a young puppy might be too impulsive and inexperienced to notice before it's too late. I don't know about you, but I like my dogs with BOTH eyeballs, thank you very much. Quote:

I think the OP is being a bit overdramatic. No dog is going to be impaled by these prongs. In fact, I think what he is "reporting" are in the same vein as these:
 These are examples of tools used to prevent pigeons from gathering in a particular place. In any case, give your dog some credit! He will see and detect these "impaling devices" before they can do any damage. PS/Disclaimer: I am a dog owner.

This morning as I walked a dog down Jersey Ave, I noticed some metal skewers sticking out of the ground at the base of a tree near the intersection of 5th and Jersey Ave. I reached down and pulled out a device that can only be described as a home-made "booby trap" clearly designed to impale a dog as the dog bends to sniff the base of the tree. I found another one zip-tied to the base of a street sign near 6th and Jersey. The devices are about a foot and a half long, made entirely of metal, shaped like a capital "H", with 6" metal prongs or skewers welded along the top.
I removed them and delivered them to the police station, where I also filed a report. As a side note, I was walking a dog on a dead-end street off of Magnolia, between Summit &Baldwin, about 3 weeks ago, and a neighbor warned me to be on the lookout for hidden metal skewers that "someone" had strategically placed on that street as well. I never saw any myself on that street, but it appears this may not just be an issue in Hamilton Park.
