The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced it was giving a $250,000 grant to the Jersey City Housing Authority on Wednesday to improve safety and security at city public housing properties.

?These much needed resources will be used to help Jersey City families living in public housing feel safer and more secure in their communities,? said HUD Acting Regional Administrator Mirza Orriols.

The Jersey City Housing Authority said it would be using the funding to install security cameras and keycard entry systems, and to repair parking lot gates.

The grant is part of $2.9 million in funds that the Department of Housing and Urban Development is sending to 15 different public housing agencies across the country as part of its Capital Fund Emergency Safety and Security program. The program defines "safety and security emergencies" as significant risks to public housing occupants due to violent crimes or property related crimes.
