excellent advice. the last thing anybody wants is for the remaining good places to be infested by haterz from JC.

Hmm. Agreed. Tried it once for brunch and thought the food was uninspired, at best. If I recall correctly, it wasn't particularly pricey (for brunch) but it was somewhat greasy and the food was not memorable. I would be willing to give it another try if a new chef is coming on board.

Michael Anthony's has a new owner and new chef - the old chef walked out a couple of days ago... apparently the place is being renovated for a couple of months in time for the fall...

the food can only get better...

Just take her to Marco and Pepe. Great bartender with all the great cocktail fixings...or wine menu....and then if things go right, you can migrate to a table for fine food and conversation.

cicada was open practically the next week after the storm while edward's just opened a week or two ago and tommy two scoops opened this past weekend. i think all cicada did was throw out the awesome 1980's creepy couch and the random macintosh computer and get some new tables and chairs.

If the neon beer sign in the window of the Golden Cicada is lit, they are open; if it's not, they are closed. The hours are extremely erratic.

Pier 13 in Hoboken has the best view and nice grass to lounge on while having a drink... but it gets kinda crowded lately...

Drinks at the Hyatt means sex afterwards.

Henry's on the hudson is the drinks with a view spot. Michael Anthonys has horrible food, but still has a great view.

As for the original question, lots of good ideas here but I'd need more info to weigh in. Is this a date with someone you really like? B/c that calls for a more fancy cocktails, quiet, candlelit, intimate vibe (maybe VU). Or is this a first meeting with someone you don't yet know if you like? B/c that calls for a more fun, busy vibe (Surf City if you want to go beer, maybe the outdoor lounge area at Maritime Parc if you want wine/cocktails). This is making me realize that JC needs more options that take advantage of the water.

I'd suggest Michael Anthony's or Surf City. Maritime Parc is a bit more upscale and more of a restaurant. How does a relationship get pear-shaped?

Hey all, I am recently returned to JC after my marriage went pear-shaped. I left in 2006, and since then it has just exploded. I am going on a first date on Thursday evening, and the guy asked if we could meet for a drink somewhere on the water. Since back in my day that meant the Starbucks over in Newport, I am at a loss. I am more of an Iron Monkey rooftop person, but I think he wants more of a view. Anyone with thoughts on this? Thanks.

If you'd like to sit outside, Surf City and Henry's On The Hudson are options. If you'd like to stay inside with some A/C the Hyatt has some great views. You may also want to consider places in Hoboken.

Henry's not a good first date, place (mallish)... think VU is nice but stuffy... Michael Anthonys Newport, nice view, not sure about the food/table service, but if just drinks, can't be bad... Liberty House?? Maritime Parc over at LSP... of course there is Hoboken waterfront option, stay away from W (distractions) and there is the waterview rooftop Hoboken Bar over on 14th... Have Fun!

Michael Anthony's will get you a pretty good view.

I hear that down by the end of Morris Canal Park is a romantic spot for a few quiet beers, lots of folks go down there in the evenings.
