I just came back from the HBLR. And I spoke with a conductor and told him what Bodhipooh had mentioned. This was his response:

"I know about none of dat". As long as you got the ticket, you have time, you can ride."

1. Either it was their policy in the beginning that people purchase a ticket in one direction every time, regardless of time remaining. For whatever reason they are not enforcing it.

2. Or they decided to go with riding it as long as you had time........but never bother to update their literature/policy statements.

FYI just because you do not see people buying a ticket does not mean that don't have one, I look like the only hippie in GV boarding the LR without a ticket and many assume I don't have one so they give me the evil eye.

However I hate buying tickets and the whole stamping nonsense, so I buy monthly passes(which a lot of peeps do) which is a great deal and saves you the headache that comes along from buying a single ticket.

They are at the Richard street station daily, sometimes two or three cars are there at one time. We had a huge heroin problem at this station a few months back and NJTP, Bayside Park Block Association and JCPD are now on top of it.

So on any day (even Sundays) you will find NJTP outside the station checking tickets as you exit the station. If you feel your station is not being monitored or you want more enforcement please call 973 378 6565, NJTP is very responsive.

You are correct in that, Asif. For the most part, the enforcement officers are mostly (only?) concerned with there being time left on your stamped ticket. But, anecdotal evidence says that some people have been busted for using a ticket more than once (say, as a round trip ticket) even though they were within the allotted time.

Personally, I hardly ever use the light rail, probably less than 10 times in a year, as I prefer to get around town on a bicycle or walking, and find the fare to be too high for short trips of a stop or two.

Wow Bodhipooh! I was not aware....but so many times i have presented the ticket to inspectors and they have never said a word.

The other day, a conductor saw my ticket cause i thought he was checking tickets.....he said he wasn't checking tickets but noted that i had plenty of time.

This leads me to believe, that either those enforcing the rules don't know them or don't care.

Light rail was one of my favorite moments of watching my boyfriend acclimate to Jersey City.

"Who do I give my ticket to?
"It's the honor system, babe. For real."
"Wait ... um, wait ... WHAT?"

It freaked him out.

I always feel like such a goody-goody buying my ticket -- I swear I don't think I've ever seen anyone else use the machines at Harismus Cove or the 9th St station in Hbken, the two stops I frequent.

Asif, you are incorrect. If you refer to the OFFICIAL light rail website (the link was provided below) you will see that the official policy is that tickets are valid for a one-way trip, in one direction. In fact, the light rail tickets clearly state on the front that they are ONE WAY tickets. But, if you still wish to disagree, or quibble on semantics, here is a direct excerpt from the site:

Tickets are valid for one continuous trip in one direction

Please don't disseminate erroneous information.

You can ride with a ticket for 90 minutes when it is stamped. It does not matter where you go or in what direction. As long as there is time....you can ride to your heart's content.

Correction. He didn't go to jail because he was caught without a ticket. He was sent to jail when he didn't pay the ticket and go to court to fight it. They issued a warrant, and was arrested when he asked a cop what to do about the warrant.

What a dummy!

the one time I got checked, it was 11:30 PM, 30 minutes before the New Year. I couldn't understand it, but now I always buy a ticket, it's just not worth it.

For a long time I never paid. I finally got caught in Hoboken, and the cost of the ticket roughly equated to what I previously got away with.

As already stated, tickets are only good for one trip / one trip. But, as everyone else has added, they don't care so much.

I really, really wish they would step up enforcement of HBLR tickets. It would cut back on truancy and other mischief. Additionally, it would have the effect of encouraging more people to actually pay for it (the fear of being ticketed) hopefully leading to more and better service.

I would buy two tickets, I have seen several people get tickets and young teenagers arrested at Liberty State Park station due to no ID. Its not worth it, The best bust though IMO is when they ticket some old person who thinks the lightrail is free.

for the past few years (since the Light Rail is in business), I've bumped into a checker only once(3 weeks ago, at the Newport Mall station)! I usually only take the Light Rail to the mall and back - I suppose that one time made it worthwhile buying a ticket all those times!!! However, before I purchase everytime, I do hesitate and wonder if I should buy a ticket... And I usually chicken out...

From the website:

(Tickets are valid for one continuous trip in one direction.)

This means that you are not supposed to use it for the return trip. You could probably get away with it since the checkers only glance to see the expiration time, but I have heard of people getting a fine because they used the same ticket on a return trip, even though it had not expired.

It's good for 1.5 hours from the time stamped. Technically only one way, but I've asked the guys that check the ticket.

They were OK with you using the same ticket for the return trip?

Yes. And if you have any problem tell them that SOS from the internets said it was OK. But seriously, you won't have a problem unless it falls beyond the 90 minute window.
