Six people, including five from Hudson County, appeared separately in court today on the charges of money laundering and running a prostitution business in Jersey City.

Luis J. Lebron, Jr., 20, of Jersey City; Baltazar Gonzalez, 36, of Hoboken; Luz I. Morales, 29, of Hoboken; Bernadette Rubio, 28, of Hoboken; Pedro J. Rivera, 49, of North Bergen; and Jeroham W. Olortegui, 21, of Pine Brook were all charged.

Central Judicial Processing court Judge Margaret Marley set bails for Lebron, Morales and Rubio at $5,000, Olortegui, at $7,500, Rivera, $10,000 and Gonzalez at $75,000. All bails have a with a 10 percent option.

When contacted for details about the case, such as where the prostitution business was run and how the six people were arrested, the Jersey City Police Department did not immediately respond for comment.
According to criminal complaints, probable cause for the arrests was based on "an analysis of financial documents, surveillance conducted and information received from multiple confidential informants."

That is how it used to be in Rhode Island, pretty much. Prostitution in Rhode Island wasn't legal per se, it was just "not illegal" if that makes any sense. Basically, the law said that soliciting on the street was illegal, but said nothing about what could be done "off the street". So that's how it played out - a few rub and tug places, some of which may have offered full service and virtually no street solicitation. Then some holier than thou politicians in Rhode Island decided to impose their morals on everyone else and passed laws to close the loophole. The rub and tug industry wasn't well organized or strong enough to fight it from being passed. Anyway, a few places immediately closed, but most continued what they were doing. In the end, not a whole lot changed and it certainly didn't make the streets of Providence any safer.

Woman says she's OK with turning tricks, but was forced to commit robbery, police say
Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal

A Massachusetts woman charged with a gunpoint robbery and prostitution this morning in Jersey City told police she willingly turned tricks, but a couple of the men she was arrested with forced her to commit the robbery.

At about 3:20 a.m., police arrested Brianha Perreira, 20; Michael G. Gomez, 22; Bryant McGauley, 24; Datshaun Lawrence, 20, and Jermaine D. Davis, 29, all of Massachusetts, police reports said.

All five were charged with the robbing a 7-Eleven on Tonnelle Avenue, police reports said.

Police were called after a woman robbed the 7-Eleven at gunpoint and a store employee gave police a description of the getaway vehicle, reports said.

Officers quickly spotted the vehicle and the five people inside the vehicle were arrested, reports said.

At the North District police station, Perreira said the five were heading to New York but changed their minds after she told the others she knew how to make money as a prostitute, reports said.

She said they got a hotel room on Tonnelle and she went out on the street and turned a trick for $100, reports said.

But she told police that upon returning to the room, Davis and Gomez were angry she'd made so little, reports said, adding that Perreira was described as wearing high boots and having no front teeth.

She said the pair drove her to the 7-Eleven where Davis handed her a gun, told her to rob the store and threatened her, reports said.

When she got back into the vehicle she turned over the loot and they drove back to the hotel, reports said, adding that all five then drove away but were quickly apprehended.
Perreira told police "that she was willing to do the prostitution but did not want to do the robbery."

The males are charged with robbery, human trafficking, promoting prostitution, hindering apprehension and weapons offenses, while Perreira is charged with robbery, prostitution, hindering apprehension and weapons offenses, reports said.

Some of the prostitutes on Chapel Rd look and dress like any other kid waiting for the bus (there is a bus stop there on Ocean on both sides) and I know of some school girls that have been approached by johns who mistake them for prostitutes while they wait for the bus! :/
Not Good!
I'm sure these are vulnerable young girls who are probably either underage, caught up in a sex slave trafficking ring and were originally being drugged against their will and need some serious help!

I would rather have a few discrete rub-n-tug places than have prostitutes soliciting on the street.

Back during the Schundler administration, there was a big crackdown on the hotels on 1&9. Hookers and their johns were now doing it in stairwells or sneaking into people's backyards in the Western Slope section. Prostitution didn't go away.. it just moved.

I would rather we take the approach Singapore has in regulating / controlling the practice.

Because police in Jersey City have better things to do, like deal with violent crimes in this city. You think Jersey City is the only place where this happens? Also, if it is so important to you, why don't you report them to the police yourself? Furthermore, if all these places were raided and shut down, would you feel any safer on the streets at night? I know I wouldn't. Finally, shutting them down will only result in somebody else opening up the same kind of place a few doors down the next month. People are going to do this no matter how hard law enforcement pushes.

If you reply to this, try NOT TO OVERUSE THE CAPITAL LETTERS.

North Bergen police arrest 12 on prostitution charges, say they monitor websites' ads

Print By Aiyana Cronk/The Jersey Journal
May 03, 2013

NORTH BERGEN -- Following a six-week investigation, township police arrested 11 women, including a 72-year-old, and a man on prostitution and other charges, Police Capt. Patrick Irwin said yesterday.

The 72-year-old woman was charged with promoting prostitution.

An employee of the Days Inn, on Tonnelle Avenue near 29th Street, called in a tip March 13, expressing concern that illegal activity might be taking place in one of the hotel rooms, Irwin said.

When police arrived, the suspects had already checked out. But the tip launched an investigation that led to the arrests of the 12 individuals at three hotels, a "spa," and a private home in the township, Irwin said.

After receiving the tip, officers began monitoring ads that appeared on craigslist.com and backlist.com advertising for "escorts" who worked out of hotels.
Posing as "johns," officers called and scheduled "dates" with the "escorts," Irwin said.

As a result of the investigation the following individuals were charged with prostitution:
Nora Moya, 26, of Hoboken; Leidiane Silve-Souza, 23, Paula Dias Denoni, 21, of Newark, Autiavise Webb, 20, Nicole Murray, 24, and Ciara Wilson, 22, of Ohio; Herminia Lozada, 28, Migyeong Yun, 39, and Jamey Yoo, 42, of New York; and Desiree Lopez, 22, of Hackensack.

Young Chung, 72, of New York, and Rodrigo Rosales-Ponce, 32, of Union City, were charged with promoting prostitution.

Webb was additionally charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and Moya was charged with hindering apprehension.

Five women were charged with engaging in prostitution at the Day's Inn, along with one woman each at the Super 8 Motel, at 2800 Columbia Ave., and the Howard Johnson, at 1300 Tonnelle Avenue, police said.

In addition, three people were arrested at the "Wellness Hands and Healing Spa," at 7704 Kennedy Blvd., two women for allegedly engaging in prostitution and the 72-year-old for allegedly promoting prostitution, police said.

An alleged prostitute and Rosales-Ponce were arrested a private residence on Cottage Avenue off 46th Street, police said.

"Our department prides itself on keeping up with technology and being on the cutting edge of public safety," Police Chief Robert Dowd said.

"These skills were enormously useful here, as our officers were able to monitor various websites in real time to ascertain the locations and times of impending criminal

legalise prostitution in industrial areas away from residential and school zones with premises that have regular health checks for their workers.
Any premises or workers outside that area is fair game for prosecution and should face further charges if sex workers are proven to spread diease - Many other countries and cities regulate there prostitutes and whore houses this way.
Unfortunately JC is ass-backwards with many social issues.

NJ could go back to the old Victorian Compromise: Allow legal prostitution in specific areas (away from normal residential neighborhoods) then vigorously enforce keeping vice from spreading from that area.

Nevada is the only state I can think of that does that today.

This thread did remind me of something I've been wondering, though - are there JC zoning laws against strip clubs? I'm not aware of any (at least I haven't seen any...) in the entire town, and I'm kinda surprised, it being a large, urban environment.

Who are these people really hurting (other than themselves, maybe) and what will arresting them really do? It won't make the streets any safer. Don't tie up police resources with this nonsense, they have bigger priorities. Even if they are arrested and taken off the streets, someone else will replace them eventually. Just don't purchase their services if you don't like what they do.

What about the spread of STDs if not to the johns but to the loved ones around them. This becomes a public health hazard, thats how it becomes wrong.

Locking up the johns and the prostitutes will not stop the spread of these diseases. For every one of them you lock up, another will take their place. Also it's peoples' own responsibility to wear protection and get tested if they have multiple partners. That is not law enforcements' problem.

But I'm sure all of you holier-than-thou types have the safety of this city and society in mind. :eye roll:
