June 12, 2013

Dear Police District Captains,

We at Bike JC would like to thank you for the essential presence of the Jersey City police officers riding and driving along with over 800 bicyclists at Bike JC?s Fourth Annual Jersey City Ward Tour.

This was our fourth time out with Jersey City?s finest and, as usual, the officers were professional, polite, and helpful beyond the call. Officers on bicycles and motorcycles stopped at intersections to protect riders, helped move along some of the more leisurely paced riders, and provided an essential interface between riders and drivers on the Sunday morning streets. The Tour came off beautifully, with everyone finishing safely and in good spirits, all thanks to the efforts of the Jersey City police. We particularly appreciated the encouragement to our riders given by officers who were along the route. This year has received a tremendous amount of positive feedback and we can?t say enough how instrumental the JCPD plays in guaranteeing our Tour?s success.

We would like to acknowledge and commend the Police Department once again for supporting bicycling and safe streets in Jersey City and the annual Ward Tour.

Thanks again. Let?s make a date for next year.

Sincerely,

Christopher Englese
President, Bike JC

I think all the cops did a great job. Automobile drivers in Jersey City are the worst, and I felt a lot more secure with the Motorcycle cops acting like a buffer on the portions of the route that were two way traffic. For these officers to be a safety buffer at the left edge of the bike group they had to be riding into oncoming Jersey City car traffic, always at the edge of the oncoming lane or IN THE ONCOMING LANE. The sirens were certainly necessary for our safety. If any Jersey City police are reading this I would like to say Thank You.

The woman cop cheering us on at Lincoln Park was fantastic! (She popped up again in Journal Square, too.) Also thanks to the very helpful bicycle cop who helped get my bike chain back on after it slipped off at the start.

I have to agree with the comments about the distracting police sirens, though. The police car sirens were tolerable, but the motorcycle sirens were significantly louder and almost unbearable. And yeah, although the band at the finish (They Live!) was excellent, all in all there were a lot of decibels for what was supposed to be a relaxing Sunday bike ride.

What about giving riders the entire width of the street--as NYC does with bike tours--instead of just one half? That way, the tour might be more compact and there would be less need for motorcycle cops to have to keep racing ahead of the pack.

Agree with other posters - the event was really well put together. I was sitting a non-profit table...next year I'm riding!!

Kudos to the organizers. Music and food options were great also.

Thanks for all the comments - we had a great time and worked tirelessly to correct some of the problems we experienced last year. It seems to have worked. The turnout and response have been fantastic. Please let us know your thoughts - both positive and negative - as we continue to make this a more perfect experience for all. Thanks again and take a moment to 'like' us on Facebook for all up to date information.

I thought that the organizer and the police did a much better job than they did last year. The water tank at Lincoln park was an excellent idea, and the durations of breaks were just about the right length too. Yes, siren was a bit obnoxious, but probably necessary for safety reasons.

The organizers did a good job.... police were fine, in fact there was one woman police officer cheering bikers on ... saw her at Lincoln Park, Journal Square and intersection Rt139 passing over the highway... also the police officer encouraging bikers up the big hill at Lincoln Park JFK entry... usually heard the sirens but that was because they were passing the group via the oncoming traffic lane to get to the next intersection... saw a couple dummy riders on sidewalks but overall the riders and the crowd on sidewalks were enjoying themselves. It was nice to see the city from that vantage point.

Instead of starting a new thread I'll place my observation and thoughs here.

1. Legally a vehicle is also a bicycle.
2. Vehicles are required to be registered and have plates
3. Vehicles are required to have insurance.
4. A percentage of registration fees is supposed to provide funds for street repairs and create new streets.
5. When a car hits a cyclist or pedestrian its the license plate that helps identify the owner and the responsible person.
6. If a cyclist hits a car or pedestrian how do you identify them if they ride-off.

My neighbor was hit by a cyclist which knocked her down (she is in her early 70's)- the cyclist then badly scratched a car fender as he rode off. The cyclist failed to giveway to pedestrians as the car did.

My neighbor is up for medical bills (cut and bruising) and the driver of the car will either have to pay for the repairs himself or hand-over an excess fee to the insurer to get them to fix it. (unable to identify the guilty person)

Therefore what are valid reasons why cyclists aren't registered, have insurance and have a license plate (one that is pedestrian friendly) visible - Obviously an exemption for children under the age of 18 (minors)

I own a motorbike and car and pay taxes for both!

The JCPD on motorcycles were "leapfrogging" in order to clear intersections. This seemed to work very well, but each time one of the patrolmen rode by in order to "leap" the mass of riders, they blared their sirens. The patrolmen often blared the sirens when it seemed there were no cyclists blocking, or that could potentially stray into their path, so it just seemed unnecessary, and out of step with what would otherwise have been a relaxing ride through J.C.

The heavy metal band at Exchange Place was amplified way too loud. My wife and I couldn't hear each other speaking, and it was impossible to have a relaxing beer after a long ride. I asked the fellow working the soundstage if he could turn down the volume a bit, but was politely dismissed. We would have loved to stay, but decided to leave.

You hit on my only two beefs in an otherwise perfect ride. The siren blasts often seemed apropos of nothing, and made me jump out of my skin on more than one occasion. And we stayed maybe three minutes at the plaza before being driven away by the sound system (music lover here, not just an old fuddy-duddy complaining about those kids and their goddam racket.)

Such a fun day! Big thanks to the Bike JC organizers, and that enthusiastic police woman cheering us on from the intersection at the S.E. corner of Lincoln Park.

Just a quick note to express my gratitude to the people at Bike JC who organized today's Ward Tour.
I helped out a bit today, but that's a drop in the bucket compared to the many months of work behind the scenes to put this fine event together.

Thank you!

- Brian

Everyone has to start at 11 to ride on closed roads. The front of the pack leaves at 11, and the back will be gone within a few minutes, along with our police escort.

After that, police will re-open the roads behind us to car traffic.

Come celebrate another year of policy and community accomplishments with Bike JC at the 4th annual Jersey City Ward Tour, a sixteen-mile group bike ride through all six wards of Jersey City on June 2nd. The Tour starts and finishes at Exchange Place, leaving at 11 am. Registration is required and is free online at http://bikejc.org with a suggested donation of $5.

The festival at Tour's End features great goods including food and beer (White Star Bar); live music (Rock-it Docket); nonprofit showcase; gold sprint races; photo booth and a bike rack design competition. Riders and non-riders alike are invited to Exchange Place from 1-5 pm on June 2nd.

Bike JC is a citizen-based advocacy organization that aims to make Jersey City streets welcoming for bicyclists, by promoting bike-friendly policies, including bike lanes; bicycle education; and traffic law enforcement. The Jersey City Ward Tour (JCWT) brings together recreational, avid, and first-time urban cyclists on a festive group ride.

The Tour starts downtown and travels up Montgomery to Grand Street, heading south on Garfield Ave in Greenville, where it hooks back north via Danforth and Mallory to Lincoln Park. Exiting the park, it heads north along Kennedy Blvd to North Street and Palisade Avenues in the Heights, eventually coming down Newark Ave and Seventh Street to end up back downtown and finish at Exchange Place.

Riders must be 10 and up to participate and must wear helmets.

Because of the police escort and closing the streets to vehicle traffic for the length of the tour it is best that all start on time so as to keep the pack together.

Registration has opened at 9am since our first year - and the race does kick off at 11am. There has been no change to this process. 10am is a fine time to arrive.

Please note that Bike JC and the JCPD strongly encourage all participants to leave their bags at home. Use of transparent bags would be best and ALL bags are subject to search.

Does anyone know of a way of getting bikes for this tour? Rentals around the area run around $50 per bike and I'm looking for 2 so seeing if there are any other options. Thanks!

Downtown doesn't corner the market riding on sidewalks, the Heights has it's share of idiot adults and scrappy teenagers on cell phones hitting the sidewalks each and everyday. These are mutants that don't even have a pot to kiss in. When you are run down by them you get injured and they are gone scot free. Even if you do catch them they got nothing to offer. Always look both ways when exiting a business you might get clipped.

Does this mean Downtown JC residents are actually willing to bike in the streets as opposed to sidewalks? I'm completely serious. I get children biking on sidewalks, totally fine. But a grown adult I do not understand.

Jersey City Ward Tour, June 2, 11 am, Exchange Place. Raindate June 9.

Bike JC announces its fourth annual Jersey City Ward Tour, a fifteen-mile group bike ride through all six wards of Jersey City on June 2. The Tour starts and finishes at Exchange Place, leaving at 11 am. Registration is required and is free online at bikejc.org.

The After Tour festival features food and beer, live music, and a nonprofit showcase. Riders and non-riders alike are invited to Exchange Place from 1-5 pm on June 2 (raindate of June 9). The After Tour will also debut the guidelines for its Bike Rack Design Competition, held in collaboration with the Jersey City Art School and the City of Jersey City. The Jersey City Art School will host a table with materials to design a rack on the spot. The winning design will be manufactured and used on the streets of Jersey City.

For those riders with energy to spare, the After Tour will also host Gold Sprint Races, in which cyclists on stationary bikes compete against each other in front of spectators. A computer tracks speeds and wins within brackets (much like basketball) until an ultimate winner emerges.

Bike JC?s Fourth Annual Ward Tour is made possible by the support of the City of Jersey City, the Hudson Transportation Management Association, Iron Monkey, Buy-Rite, Pole Position Raceway, the Jersey City Board of Education, the Historic Downtown Special Improvement District, United Water, the Jersey City Art School, Madame Claude Caf?, Madame Claude Wines, Institute for Personal Growth, White Star, Captain Al?s, Yelp!, Rock-it Docket, Grove Street Bicycles, and Barcade.

Riders must be 10 and up to participate and must wear helmets. Riders should try to leave any bags at home and carry necessities on themselves and their bicycles; all bags are subject to search.

Hopefully we won't need to wait for an hour on the east side of Lincoln Park this time for the police escort this year...
