A Jersey City man running from police officers after they responded to a domestic dispute Sunday night was shot by cops multiple times when he reached into his waistband, according to a preliminary investigation, Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Gene Rubino said.
The 35-year-old Belmont Avenue man is in critical condition at the Jersey City Medical Center, Rubino said. Police had received a report the man involved in the domestic dispute was carrying a gun, Rubino said. When police arrived, the 35-year-old ran from police toward Monticello Avenue, Rubino said. According to the initial investigation, police repeatedly ordered the man to stop and show his hands. Police fired when the man reached for his waistband, Rubino said. A handgun was recovered at the scene and was identified as having been in the possession of the 35-year-old, Rubino said.

Jersey City police officers were involved in a shooting on Belmont Avenue, between Bergen and Monticello Avenues, late last night, according to a source with limited knowledge of the investigation. The two officers fired their weapons and were taken to a local hospital for an examination related to stress, the source said. The shooting took place after 10 p.m. at a two-family house and involved the first-floor tenant, according to the second-floor resident. Details on the shooting were not immediately available, Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Gene Rubino said. There were no apparent bullet holes or police tape this morning, according to Jersey Journal staff writer Anthony Machcinski. A woman was seen walking into the first-floor apartment, but did not answer the door. Jersey City police spokesman Stan Eason referred questions to the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office, which is investigating the shooting.
