Look at the link posted to the Hoboken city website.

They post fares to ALL of JC. There are specific rates.

I would save the link in your phone (if no smartphone, print the page and keep it in your wallet) and tell them- the city of Hoboken says the fare to Grove St is $11. If they argue, show them the website, and if they keep it up, take their info and report it to Hoboken.

There is needs to be a Hudson County-wide cab regulation system like there is in NYC. Until then, regulate yourself and it seems to me like Hoboken is doing just that.

I can't lie, I get very tired of haggling Hoboken cab drivers and it seems I have to do that every time I want to go to Jersey City (I've had them lock their doors to not let me in the cab because they didn't want to drive to JC, I've had them kick my wife OUT of the cab, she won't even try anymore).

I'm not really sure. You can haggle a little bit. I tend to ask how much before I take the taxi. A few times the drivers replied 20 .... or even one said 25 on a rainy night. Then I call them crazy, and let the person behind me take the cab and hit up the next one. Once, the 20-dollar guy came down to 15. And on one occasion, I was feeling cheeky, having a tight week, and there were a bunch of cabs so they were slow ... and I affirmatively asked, listen, can you take me to X address for 10 bucks? And she did.

Edit: Oh, interesting. Thanks for that -- now I will haggle on a more informed basis! :)

Thx. I always wondered if they have to show you a fixed rate chart or if there's a standard. I've been charged from $12-20 for the same ride, my wife charged more. Does anyone know if there is a Hoboken Taxi commission or somewhere to really find out these things? I don't understand why they can't post in their taxi like NYC cabs.

I'm answering my own question-he overcharged $4: http://www.hobokennj.org/departments/ ... taxi-limousine-licensing/

LOWER JERSEY CITY
Columbus Driver Area $12.00
Exchange Place $12.00
155 Washington Blvd. & 100 Warren St. $12.00
4th Street $9.00
7th Street $11.00
Grove St. PATH $12.00
Grand St. & Jersey Ave. $16.00
Grand St. & Pacific $18.00
Pacific & Johnston $18.00
Pacific, Caven Point Road $22.00

The problem with the PATH is that on the weekends or late night you may be waiting up to 20-25 min for the train. And non-rush hour at night the connecting train at Newport isn't timed right so you wait there for like 15 min

Well it's just shy of 2 miles as per google maps. If this were NYC, I know that it's $3.00 to start and .50 every fifth or sixth of a mile. So that'd be around ten bucks. Given that Hoboken cabbies are mostly asses who don't use the meter, but instead make up prices, I'm surprised you weren't charged more. One donkey wanted to charge me $25 to get up to christ hospital once, which is an even shorter distance. I told him to kiss my ass and walked it.

$15 is reasonable during the daytime with the traffic and getting stuck at lights. At night it's probably twice the speed and should be more like $8.

I was charged $16. There's nothing posted in the cab to prove otherwise.
