I can't speak to the specific situation, but:
Yes, large trees can be damaging to city infrastructure. They can not only buckle sidewalks (which puts the building owner at legal risk), the roots can grow around and damage pipes. It's unfortunate, but keep in mind that a tree-lined street enhances the value of those properties. A property owner or manager isn't going to cackle with evil glee because a pretty tree was taken down; they're going to get the tree cut down if it's necessary.

Jasco management building requested the removal. According to the department of forestry Jasco submitted an application to have the trees remove pending sidewalk repair. When I spoke to a Mr. Lunch at 201.547.4449 (dont quote me word for word) with the side walk repair the roots may be damaged and kill the trees. Now, I am not an engineer but why not leave the trees and deal with replacement later if needed. Part of the application permit was Jasco has to replace the trees.. But these were full grown beautiful tress that added to the beauty of HP. The tenants of this building are just as upset as our HP neighbors. My opinion in the Department of Forestry jumped the gun on allowing the trees to be removed and should be held to some accountability. (again, i dont know what the details of the repair are.. but I have seen many sidewalk repairs without tress being cut down). You can always call the department of forestry and jasco management in Jersey City to voice your option. Thanks for noticing...

Way too many beautiful trees are taken down all over downtown JC, and way too many blocks lack trees. Please, more trees, not less. Even the best architectural blocks look awful without trees, especially with hideous power lines all over the place. I believe for only a couple hundred bucks, the city will plant a tree at your request. Now is probably the time to do it.

Why? Why were the two beautiful trees on Erie Street between 9th and 10th street cut down? I just walked by last night and they were blooming again in the lovely spring! We rented in The Academy for 8 years before buying around the corner 6 years ago and lived in Unit 105 facing the street. One of the trees looked great just outside our huge window. I loved that tree. Why? Why?? They were pruned frequently. They didn't seem to cause any trouble! Why?? That block of Erie looks awful now! Why????
