Here is a link to an $1800 2BR in SH. Assigned and guest parking, so should fit 2 cars.
http://newjersey.craigslist.org/apa/3751715979.html There were others in that price range.

Nothing specific, but I think they flooded during Sandy (then again almost everywhere in the area flooded) and it's next to the port so I would assume you get some noise from that. Should be easy in an out from there.

Anyone know anything about the Alexan City View complex in Bayonne? It's a little pricey but almost brand new and I think it has some section 8 units.

I know a few people who rent off of Sip ave near 440 and they all have 2-3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, full laundry, stainless appliances, driveways and garage spots, all under 1700 a month. Keep looking and if you want to be in Jersey City you will catch a deal sooner or later.

Right. I have had my share of nightmares while growing up in JC. Shootings/stabbings/robberies - you name it. I suppose that's why I am very cautious, but I am glad to hear JC is changing or has changed for the better. The spot crime thing about BL was probably silly, but I had no objective info about the place. I will take a drive around there and see exactly how it has changed. Any particular streets to avoid or favor?

Well then you need to really take a 2nd look around, I don't think most of us on this board would be living in Jersey City, or GV, BL, TH, or JS if it was the 1990's. Alot has change since the 90's. The secret to looking outside of downtown is to see how far the nearest section 8 housing is to the place you want to buy or rent. The closest one near me is 3 blocks away and its for seniors. When I lived downtown I lived across from the projects which was a nightmare at times. When I lived in JSQ I lived near 12 section 8 buildings total fucking nightmare all the time.

The OP grew up in JC in the 90s so he knows about all the neighborhoods. He was trying to see which one fit his budget. He was priced out of all of his first choices, a 2 br for 2K with 2 parking spaces. I think if he went farther away he would still have the same problem.

Never was questioning why anyone would mention anything other than PL or SH, but BL just seemed a little odd to suggest. Anyways, that's what I came on here for - to get opinions on various neighborhoods and I am glad to hear you like BL. Maybe I will go check it out in person and to see whether it has changed for the better.

I'm confused, didn't the OP grow up in JC? He/She should know JC inside out.

The OP seems to have a specific requirements however someone?s budget must always dictate which options are the highest priority. Is the town the most important? Safety? Space?
I have a large dog so an apartment or condo was somewhat out of the equation. I felt like my best bet would be to buy something in an area that was safe enough though my budget dictated areas that are more on the border. I chose a beautiful building that just requires some work inside. I am able to get almost everything I want, including a yard for my dog. As the area around me continues to improve I?ll be able to benefit from an increase in property value. It would be great if a lot of other people see my area the same and jump on the opportunity, but it?s not going to happen overnight. I know the OP was asking about areas of JC, however they might want to look in Harrison. There is a ton of new construction going in. It?s already safe and the prices are dirt cheap for renting. They?d be able to get a large place with easy access to highways for commuting south and into Manhattan.

Why wouldn't SH or PL fit OP's budget?
There are places in SH with a two car garage and there is definitely guest parking OP could use... I agree OP isn't rainbows and sunshine but I agree that people are get nasty and try to make it seem like if you live in JC you shouldn't have a car or drive or must be some kind of soccer mom if you drive places. That and like I've said before, OP could have said someone wants to rent me a condo in Newport for 3 cents and someone here would say "Newport is generic" or something else ridiculous. Not everyone is the same, especially in JC. Can't we get over that?

2 bedroom, 2 bath, 2 parking spaces -- no problem. $5,000 a month should do the trick in any of the waterfront buildings. $2,000 -- no problem. 1 bedroom, 1 bath, 1 parking space fits that in many of Jersey City's neighborhoods. Not willing to compromise on anything? Either Jersey City isn't for you or you are too stupid for life.

Lenovo, Jersey City is just not for you. You don't have enough money to get what you want without compromise, and you don't seem willing to compromise.
Perhaps you should consider someplace like South Orange, Montclair, Rahway, or New Brunswick.

The problem being that there is no correct answer. No JC neighborhood fits what the poster wanted and when people pointed out potential compromises that could be made to actually find a place in her budget she got nasty.

Reading his responses, I sensed that the OP had a chip on shoulder. Maybe he felt defensive when people suggested that what we are attempting to do is not smart. I sensed (this is all speculation) that he is someone who is coming from a suburb and hasn't realized that he has to change his thinking when he lives in an urban environment.

In all fairness to the poster, most of the advice that was given to him/her was to get rid of the cars or car, take mass transit or downsize, but with no real answer to his/her question.
Also Jclisters can be just as nasty and sometimes nastier.
