February 2013

Dr. Marcia V. Lyles
Superintendent of Schools
Jersey City Public Schools

346 Claremont Ave.
Jersey City, NJ 07305

Dear Dr. Lyles:

Re: WE NEED SCHOOL BUS SERVICE!

This letter is to petition you and the School Board to please continue providing school bus service for the
children attending Academy l, lnfinity lnstitute, and the Martin Center for the Arts. The service has been a
blessing for parents who are extremely worried about their children having to take public transportation

alone.

When you first started bus service, it truly gave children throughout Jersey City a choice to attend Academy l,
lnfinity, or Martin. You were able to draw talent from all over Jersey City which is the purpose of schools of
choice. lf you discontinue bus service, you will lose a large portion of talent from outlying areas.

Without school buses many students in Jersey City would have to take two buses, changing buses at Journal
Square in order to get to school. There are many strangers as well as a number of homeless people in the area.
It is not a good place for children as young as 11 years old to travelthrough alone. Wouldn't you feel
extremely uneasy about sending your 6th grade child alone to Journal Square to change buses? What if your
child gets on the wrong bus or misses his/her stop and ends up in a strange neighborhood? What if ...? Any
number of scenarios like this could become an awful nightmare for families.

We ask you and the Board to please continue providing school bus service for children in Jersey City. We ask
that you give outlying students the same opportunity as nearby students to attend schools of choice without
jeopardizing their safety. Of course, we understand that school bussing costs money and you are trying to trim
expenses, but we firrnly believe this is definitely not the area to cut funding. We hope you will agree that
providing opportunity and safety for all students are very important.

Thank you for your consideration, and please continue school bus service!
