Jersey City NAACP installs its slate of officers

JOURNAL ENTRIES

State Sen. Sandra Cunningham of Jersey City swore in the new officers and executive committee members of the Jersey City Branch of the NAACP, Unit 2086, in a recent ceremony at the branch?s Martin Luther King Drive headquarters.

Installed as officers were: William Braker, president; Kenneth Brown, first vice president; Shante Pressley, second vice president; Frances Thompson, third vice president; Phyllis Gordon, secretary; Paulette Gordon, assistant secretary; Harry Laurie, treasurer; and Zaratu Umar, assistant treasurer.

The executive committee members are: Jeanette Braswell; Jeanette Daniels; Lucrece Dennis; Theresa Ferguson; Lily Fleming; Chanel Gordon; Wayne Harmon; Lisa Harris; Patricia Jackson; Diana Jeffrey; the Rev. Nathaniel Legay; the Rev. Reginald McRae; Virginia Miller; Abdul Muhammad; Brenda Pettiford; Helen Syria; Queen Ester Walker; Kathleen Sebron Washington; George Wilson; and Ennis Wilson.

The unit held its elections Nov. 14.

Braker, a former Hudson County freeholder, defeated Calvin Hart, who had been president from April 2011.

Five Jersey City students are among 446 named to the Dean?s List at Caldwell College.

Making the achievement were: Kimberly Conover, Angel Ortiz, Sara Riccardi, Stephen Shaw, and Tia Williams.

Kierstyn Callahan, daughter of Richard Callahan of Union City and daughter of AnnMarie French of Jersey City, a student at Saint Michael?s College in Colchester, Vt., is studying abroad for the spring 2013 semester.

Callahan, a Junior Media Studies & Sociology/Anthropology major, who graduated from Saint Dominic Academy, is a student for the semester at Stellenbosch University, in Stellenbosch, South Africa.

Bernando Paul Garcia of Jersey City is a member of the class of 2015 at The College of Mount Saint Vincent.

Army National Guard Pfc. Luis C. Cedeno from North Bergen has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, GA.

Toni-Anne Fajardo, senior of St. Dominic?s Academy and a resident of Secaucus, has been named a Commended Student in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Jessa Morgan from Bayonne received the Margaret E. Everett Music Scholarship at the annual Scholarship Day ceremony at Rockford College.
